me and the girl drove down to beaverdell. interesting little town. took 4 hours to find the mines [k]. I forgot my maps and ended up somewhere above grand forks/rock creek. found my way back down and 4 fsr's later i found out it was back 40 kms right outside of the town [freak]. anyways this is circa 1900-1930s. They have gates up cuz some company still owns the place i suppose but someone smashed them open[36]and it looks like they have been open for several years. my photography sucks but heres some of the pics!

Nice pics! Did you find any mines worth going into? There is a story behind the "bell shaped" rocks, but I can't remember it right now! I saw it on another site, will post when I find it.

Just found this info:

http://www.greenwoodcity.com/greenwoodheritage/History-Info/mining.html

"Waste slag was taken from the smelter by rail in 25-ton (23-tonne) bell-shaped slag cars, and dumped nearby. the waste slag glowed red in the night during the smelter's heyday, but it is now a black moonscape. A visitor can walk on this once molten pile of black glass and step inside some of the "hell's bells"! One can also visit the foundations of the furnaces and machinery now quiet among the encroaching undergrowth."

Trying to find a pic that I've seen, no luck yet!

Hi Been coming here a while but this is my first post. Great site. Just a heads up on the mines higher up. They used to have gates and warning radioactive signs on them. Don't knoe if they still do. That was one of the places they found uranium, in the 80s I think. It was going to be mined but B.C. put a ban on uranium mining at the time. Might not want to lick the rocks up there.

thx for the comments:

strokeit= yea we saw the signs but the gates were pushed open. I figured the radioactiveness might mutate my engine for more horsepower and i could maybe become spiderman if a spider bit me [36]

kooteney kat = no mines looked safe to go in that i could see. im sure i didnt find them all tho. theres at least a days worth of exploring there to see everything

Yup, same thing around here too.

I think that's what killed most of the miners...........too much methane gas in the mines![15][15][15]

Beaverdell was the longest running mine in BC. Closed only a fewish years ago...owned by Teck at the end. There are lots of old mines in the area though...but the former operating mine would very likely be flooded to the lowest level. Dont remember the history of the property but I was there in the late 80's to buy some gear if I remember right and it was operatinf at the time. They had a huge repair shop with a 2 ton ore car in the middle. Had a thick metal top and doors on the end...was a wood burning stove for heat. They were putting 4 or 5 foot logs into it...coffee pot on top ...was a great stove. If you are interested in old mines there are thousands...Nelson is a good area....Trout Lake near Revelstoke....Cariboo area... Lots of neat sites for interest sake but well picked over for anything valuable. That boot in your pic is well weathered but not that old...20 years maybe? That area is probably Bill Barrley(?) picked over to death...he is from that basic area I think.

Cool info on the Beaverdell mine! Sounds like one hell of a big stove! You're right, Nelson (45min drive from me!) and Trout lake are awesome areas for mine exploration. Just look for posts by me to view some pics of both areas!
