rear axle in most YJs is junk.
A D44 from a late 80s Cherokee bolts in with only minor welding

I only know about the 87-95 jeeps mostly.
All came with a Dana 30 up front... good to about 33's or 35's if you are easy on the fuel peddal.. The rears mostly had a dana 35 which is good for nothing... you can snap these things with stock tires on if you work it... but some guys have luck with them up to 35's... I wouldn't though. The odd special option YJ to canada supposivly came with a dana 44 in the rear, same as the cherokee... but i have never seen one.
4cyler's all came with 4.10 gears... open differentials front and back.
6cyler's all came with 3.07 gears... open differentials front and back (as far as I know)
The 95 yjs... had stronger axle shafts and used a 297X u-joint in the shafts which is nice.

87 YJ, 2.5" BL, SOA Dana 44's front and back, 8274 warn, 36" TSLs, 350 SBC/SM465/NP205, no lockers, and beat to shit, and my daily driver to boot.

Ya i figured as much, i would probly run d44's anyway, just gettin an idea of what's gonna be involved. What did u get the front d44 out of for your jeep?

honestly i'm not sure i think the 8.8 might be a bit stronger plus you can put disc brakes on

Go for the 8.8 try & get one from 97 on. They come with disc brakes

My dana 44 is a hybrid... i built it from all sorts of parts... the center or pumpkin is from a High pinion ford f150 or something... the tubes and knuckles are from a chevy 10 bolt... the shafts are from a wagonneer... ect ect... ya get the idea.
If you want dana 44's i would go for the wagonneer idea... they practially bolt right in, right width, ect... only reason i didn't was because i wanted the high pinion, and i could built it cheap... most people it wouldn't be worth it.
For the rear... i was running 36's open dana 44, and it didn't feel strong enough... i was always scared something was gonna happen to it... I ended up putting an eaton in the rear and just being done with it...

87 YJ, 2.5" BL, SOA Dana 44's front and back, 8274 warn, 36" TSLs, 350 SBC/SM465/NP205, no lockers, and beat to shit, and my daily driver to boot.
