The plan was to go back up Copper Mountain to find a few old mines we've read about. Wayne and I spent the day exploring old mining roads, checking out about a hundred mining prospects, and finally found a big mine we were looking for!

A view of the West Arm of Kootenay lake close to Nelson.

We ran across many of these mountain bike trails. Being close to Nelson, there are lots of bikers using this area. The guys using this catwalk are fawking nuts!

While riding up an old mining trail, I glanced up and saw this old pack trail right beside us. It was pretty cool to go up and stand on a trail that was built over 100 years ago and used by the miners!

Of all the many old prospecting sites we found, this one showed signs of a large workings at one time. This was just one of about 6 old log cabins used to house miners, cook shacks, and hold core samples.

We rounded a corner in the road to find a big tailings pile about 500' below this structure. I hiked to the top of the first tailings pile hoping to find an open adit, only to find it collapsed. Then I saw another tailings pile above it, so had to hike to the top of that one. After doing this another 4 times, I realized the workings were so old that none of the adits (tunnels) were open, and I walked back the 400 vertical feet to the quads! Nothing like combining quadding with a little hiking! If I had hiking up another 100' or so, I would have found the top, and this.

After talking to a camper, we travelled a snowmobile trail shortcut (only a shortcut on sleds!) to finally find the Silver King mine site.

Eventually, we found an adit that looked promising to check out!

The shoring of timbers just inside the entrance weren't really safe, but if they did collapse, the amount of earth above them wouldn't have blocked the entrance, so we went in! Also, there was really good ventilation coming out of the mine.

There was an old ore cart on wheels still sitting on the tracks about 100-150' inside that we wanted to check out. It's in the middle of this pic

Discovered this snowmobile cabin on the trip as well, looks like it was built on top of an old log cabin.

All in all, a good trip! Saw a hot blond driving around the backroads with her boyfriend (unfortunately!), and BS'd with her for a minute, found a couple of big old mines, but still didn't find the trail that my old map shows, so will have to head back up to Copper Lookout soon and try to find it from that end!

On the way home, had to pull over to take this pic of a young bull elk feeding about 20' from the main highway! Then, almost smoked a whitetail doe going back over the pass to home!

I've got a couple of the 700,000 candle power floodlights from Princess Auto, and Wayne just bought a floodlight from Can Tire - 10,000,000 Candle power! Makes mine look like a candle! You can feel the heat off of his light from 10' away!

Jroc, where did you guys wind up going? You could get a full size to pretty much all the places we went Friday.

Larry, we will have to plan a trip to the Keromeos/Hedley area some day, looks like lots of good exploring down there. How's the rattlesnakes though?
