View Full Version : FI 460 questions/intake/carb swap???

Found a 460 from a late 90's motor home...story goes 20-30000 km's on her...motor home burnt..but the motor was ok ( back end fire)...wire harness damaged but otherwise he said it looks ok. ( I have yet to see it).

1. Is it worth $500 you think?

2. How hard would something like this be to swap into a 78 F250 4x4 ( I guess I would need to make up awire harness/computer setup?) Sensors needed to run her would be guess I need a mass air flow and an 02 sensor..do I need a speed sensor? ( I guess I could swap in a sterling 10.25 rear that has a tone ring- but I though that ran the rear abs only???) Did motor home chassis come with a rear sump pan?

3. I've heard the newer 460's came with different heads on the injected motors.... but can you still used a normal intake and throw a carb on it? ( I was told the headers/exh manifolds required would be different)
Same cams etc or are they something special? With that many miles ( low) I would want to just stick a mild cam in her and call it a day I think. Should bold up to my built C6..so that is not an issue. Just some conversion mounts and drop it in.

Thanks again for all your help guys.

heads are different so no you cant put on a 4 barrel in take from a old 86 down but you can put older heads on then the intake.
$ 500 is a steal . it should have the rear sump pan ,but if the lift is high enough in you truck re a front spring mount drop and shackle extension it does not come close as seen in pic mine is a 79 high boy frame

there are many more sensors needed to run the efi like

throttle position sensor
exhaust gas recirculation sensor
engine coolant temp sensor
idle air control valve
barometric pressure sensor
vehicle speed sensor (only needed for an auto)
don't forget the coil plug and distributor plug
and all the fuel injectors

i think i may be missing a couple

trying to get where i want to be

If it comes with the injectors and harness as well as Throttle position sensor and an O2 sensor than thats all you need to do stand alone fuel managment and if the 460 uses EDIS ignition than you can even controll that with a good stand alone unit

I would look for an older version{there must be lots out there}so you don"t need to be dinking around with sensors and computers, its just more junk to break down.Carb and elec. ignition are reliable and can be fixed anywhere?
