Tufa:deposits left by hot, mineralized water. Once the water reaches the surface, it cools, losing much of it's dissolved gas and minerals. As a result, tiny mineral crystals are often deposited on the spring walls, nearby rocks, and any vegetation that grows too close. The resulting deposits may be crumbly and porous, in which case they are calles tufa, or hard and dense, in which case they are calle sinter. Most tufa is made of calcite(calcium carbonate, the constituent of most seashells). Gypsum(calcium sulphate) and dolomite(magnesium carbonate) are other common constituents of tufa. Sinter may be composed of a form of calcium carbonate called travertine, similar to stalactites in many caves, or a form of silica that is chemically akin to opal. Tufa is common around many hotsprings, where it often forms extensive terraces and benches. In case you wanted to know.

Just an afterthought here. You know what was different about the springs in the Kootenays compared to the ones out here? No garbage.(With the exception of St. Leon-there was a bit of a mess there). And when I say no garbage I don't mean that there was a little bit of garbage...I mean none. It kinda made me ashamed of our own hotsprings that are not so well taken care of anymore. Oh...and the reason for the St. Leon shutdown seems to be that the owner got fed up and has now decided to log the area. That's what some locals said anyway.

i don't have it all upstairs...
but who the fuck cares?

Halcyon is north of St. Leon, but since you went as far as St. Leon, you might as well of headed up Halfway!

Nice pics, and looks like an awesome camping trip! Lussier looks busy, from what I remember (was about 10 when last there!), it was busy then too. Sucks to hear St.Leon is closed. I always thought it was on crown land. :(

Yeah...we skipped Nakusp and Halcyon. Were going more for the undeveloped sites. And as for halfway...we actually tossed a coin. Starting the drive home won. Besides...it'll leave me yet another reason to get sick...errr...i mean take holidays from work.

looks like a great trip-i really have to do that one sometime.

sometime.

i dont need people to get me,i just need people to get out of my way

if you put 20 grand into a 30 grand buildup, you dont have a $20,000 rig-you're just $10,000 short of having anything.

Heya... I've been a lurker here for a while, but this thread (and the new requirement to register to read the forums) spurred me to become a member. :)

Anyhow, I have about 10 friends that want to do a similar trip but we are having problems finding some of the locations you visited. We are especially keen on visiting the hotspring waterfall.

If there was some way you could provide some directions to find these places that'd be great. Also, looking at that washout, how tough was that for the mazda to clear? I have a stock height S10-Jimmy that I will be taking.. think it would clear it?

Looking forward to your reply.
