View Full Version : 19 year old u-joints

I just finished doing ALL the u-joints on the Baby Blazer today.
I actually pulled the drive shafts yesterday afternoon but after a frustrating bout with a combination of sockets, hammer, and vise...I gave up!! I couldn't budge those joints for nothing....:(

Took them to work today.
Started off trying an arbor press.....wouldn't budge.
I checked for the thousandth time for some hidden snap ring. Couldn't find anything. That means that these things are the original press-fit/plastic injection joints!! That means they're NINETEEN years old!!![:0]

Finally said F*ck it and took them over to the hydraulic press. I'd been avoiding using this if I could because I was afraid that without the feel of feedback and the way these joints are rust-welded to the ears, I might just bust the the ears of the driveshafts.

Well, it worked.[36]

Wanna know how much pressure a couple of the joints took before pressing out???

How does over 5500lbs sound?
Them puppies popped like a small firearm.

At least it's done.............and done.:D[36]

I've been in school for so long - by now, I could've been a gynaecologist instead.

did you use a propane plumber's torch to melt out the injection molded crap?

ya exactly what mj said, plastic moulded snap rings that you can only melt out or use 5500lbs

i always melt those out,and find the cups often pop right out from the heat too.

i dont need people to get me,i just need people to get out of my way

if you put 20 grand into a 30 grand buildup, you dont have a $20,000 rig-you're just $10,000 short of having anything.

Actually, that was the first thing I wanted to do when the arbor press didn't work. But there were no less than three aircraft mechanics standing there.....only one agreed with me that heat would make short work of the job. The other two disagreed vehemently, saying that I might destroy the drive shafts with heat. And it's not like we were considering red-hot heat.........

So...with them being trained mechanics, and me not:D, I deferred to the judgement on the majority and went with the hydraulic press.

How in the hell do u-joints last 19 years anyway?? It's not like I thrash the shit out of my truck when wheeling, but I don't exactly baby it either:D:D

A man walks into a psychiatrist's office wearing nothing but SaranWrap wound tightly around his body.

The psychiatrist takes one look at him, and says....

"I can clearly see your nuts"

melting them out is the cats ass if you don't mind the smell of the burning plastic.

There is plenty of room for all gods creatures.... Right next to the mashed potatoes.

you have to use a low heat propane type torch
if you break out the OxyAcet torch you can fawk it up
tell the Aircraft guys to beat it when working on your truck :)

I do not recall her name.
She wore glasses IIRC.
Chics that can wrench get a stack of points on the hot scale.
even more if they can weld.
Riddle Lighting in the Ridge had lots of girls TIG welding.
I think I just discovered a sick fetish problem...now what to do about it??

[:I] awww its so nice when you guys say nice things about me haha [:p]

Um Magna, if the AME you were talking to was named Dwayne and 1st year. DO NOT LISTEN TO HIM. [:p] Out of the AMEs i've met, i'd only listen to Dieseljeep lol

And yup, heating em up works and if its not cherry or white, you're good to go [:p]

My next ticket is welding or class 1. Probably both. http://dungpow.com/smilies/148.gif

Original Chevy ujoints with the injected plastic, ALWAYS use some heat to melt the plastic!! Use an oxy/acteylene torch just enough to make the "plastic worm" come out the holes!!! Then press the caps out like normal.

We met a hot helicopter pilot couple years ago up the Fish River, she was helping fight a forest fire.
