Whos done it and what info can you share :)
1990 YJ

thinking 350.sm465.np205 ?
Baby jimmy axles locked, not really sure. Here the 8.8 is a good choice or the d44.
Then not really sure about driveshafts. I have a spare rear (stock fullsize).

hmmmm anyone parting a Baby Jimmy or something ....

let me know what you guys think.
Not much info on Pirate, other links would be great :)

why not go sm420 though while your at it? its got the lowest 1st(lower than the np435 or the sm465)

on second thoughts, why not go with a 302/435/205 and run a high pinion dana 44 front end and sploder 8.8?

Again, its that damn oval [:p]

I personally prefer the 350 becuase its cheap and easy to maintin and upgrade. The owner of the Jeep is still undecided about which engine, since he dosnt know much about that sorta stuff.

I'm thinking going halfers on a 1ton truck with him, putting the 1ton stuff under my truck and putting my 1/2 ton stuff on his Jeep.

But I thought I'd get some opinions first and see if anyone HERE did it THEIR Jeep. (ei, checked other sites and have read up on it, and know its common [8D])

like broncoo said. it's probably easier to put the 5.0l in cuz of fit issues. i know of one with a 5.0l and it's an alright fit.

There is plenty of room for all gods creatures.... Right next to the mashed potatoes.

Not real worried about cutting/welding or fabbing... If I run into trouble doing it, theres plenty a streetrod people in my complex that do it on a regular basis and go WAY faster than this YJ will ever go.... those cars YUM ...

That is one thing i was thinking about today tho, the rad ... thinking fan in front and make a 4core YJ rad or something?? Does your buddy have email? ;)

to keep the motor cool is the problem.. a good radiator in the front and try use mechanical fan if u can unless u know a really good fan that blows enuff air..

I can get complete D60s for my truck ($1000) and put the axles from my Blazer under the YJ. Got a Sm465 ($50 with new clutch) so it looks like we're gonna go the 350 route. He said he'll go halfers with me on new stuff for my truck so he can have the old stuff. Sounds like a good deal on both ends. Still not sure about Tcase.

I guess we'll have to make my axles shorter for the YJ, I still ahve the stock rear driveshaft from mine, just need either a new front for me or one for him.

anyways ya...

Id go with this combo.... for a drivers side drop

Chevy350/FordNP435/FordNP205 (minimal work to make the ford tranny fit) Machine down the input bearing retainer plus drill and tap a hole in your stock 350 bellhousing thats it. Easy as heck. 20 bux of machining work.

Make sure you get a fixed yoke NP205. These combos will give you a longer rear driveshaft! Nice eh. I would run an aluminum radiator from summit (not that expensive) with a shroud and mechanical 7 fin fan. Mount your engine in the middle of the engine bay. You dont want the fan too close to the radiator and you dont want the distributor cap (chevy 350) too close to the firewall or it will break everytime you 4x4.

Dont you dare ask me about EFI crap. I dont like wiring or electrical work! :D Im always gonna stick to propane. Its the solution to everything!

By the way expect a LOT of power from a 350 in a jeep, even an old tired one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I put my jeep motor into my fullsize truck and it runs like crap. Jeeps are super light and wow it felt like a camaro!!! Get dual exhaust, totally worth it and feels good when you start it up!

SM420's granny is not even that much lower than a NP435 or SM465. All are in the 7:1 ish range. SM420s are really old and tend to need to be rebuild quite often for their design as most of the gears are running almost all of the time unlike the other 2 (which are newer style trannies and just as strong and easier to find)
