After taking a couple of weekends off of quadding to finish rebuilding and installing a 350 in my truck, I got out for a ride, finding lots of snow still, and some new sights that I missed last fall. Went up Canex (again!) near Salmo, lots of snow in the shady spots even at 3500', but it's melting quick with the warm weather we've had. Pics are from Sunday the 24th and today (Friday 29th, slow at work, so got an extra day off!).

Had to stop in to see how the "hermit" made it through the winter. He's snowed in from late Nov to early April, and is looking the same as last fall!

Found more of the old townsite called "Jersey" which was built by the mining company and housed the miners and families up to 1973

We dropped down to the Lost Ck valley on an old switchback road rarely used, then found some snow to play in

We did a loop back to the Canex minesite along an old stave-pipeline trail where we also saw a moose wandering in front of us!

We had a variety of weather today, from sunny and warm to sunny trying to snow, to damn cold and windy, then back to warm! Typical Kootenay mountain weather!

Then we saw these sheep quite a ways from the farm where they are raised. Later, on the way back, we saw several more sheep along with a dog which was herding/guarding them. The closer we got on the quads (creeping up to them), the more he herded them off the road! Should have got a pic of that!

We parked the quads, and did some bushwacking looking for an old conveyor line and tunnel which were used for transporting the ore from the mine to the mill at the bottom of the valley around 1920's. The walking payed off! The conveyor belt would take ore into this tunnel (before it was boarded off) and then dump it down a 1000' vertical shaft to the valley bottom!

Next, we walked east along the conveyor cutline trying to find another tunnel showing on the map. It looks like this tunnel also went to a vertical shaft, where the ore would have been dumped down from the mine onto the conveyor belt.

Then, we stumbled across the remains of last years crop! We estimated at least 150 of the "black baggies"! Someone probably bought a new quad and sled last fall! Perfect place too, marshy area, lots of water, and recent selective logging which left lots of sunlight!

Wayne coming down this little snowy hillclimb after blasting up it! That 750 with 26" Mudlites absolutely kicks ass in the snow! My Kodiak was looking like a 2wd compared to it!

Went out Sunday May 1st as well, so figured I post the few pics I took here!

We went up Springer Ck road near Slocan and ran into this fresh mudslide, I had to winch through it, but the 750 chewed through on it's own power!

Image Insert:

After the slide, we ran into too much snow going downhill and turned around before we got stuck in the valley bottom. Then, we decided to go up to the snow and play around on the hard crust.

The Kodiak ruled here, only due to the lighter weight and the worn out tires actually benefitted 'cause they didn't break through the crust as easily!

I did alright until I hit a soft patch near the top of this little hill, then almost flopped over backwards backing down and hit another soft patch! It was a cool feeling riding on about 3' of snow around these cutblocks that otherwise would be almost impassable on a quad in summer!

cool pics! [cheers] would be fun to rip around the mines for a bit

as for the weird "mushroomy" plant, that's skunk cabbage and it grows all over the island and lower mainland in soggy places (normally lower elevations). amazed you haven't seen it before, i thought it grew everywhere in abundance

Thanks once again for the memories. I used to go wheelin in that area all the time in my younger years. Nice to see there's still some places where you can get away from it all.
