Yeah, I know, it's kind of a pansy pavement princess looking thing right now but the price was right and mods are being planned.

Thanks to everyone who gave advice and experience info. It was suggested that I get a base model (less to go wrong) - I guess I just don't listen too well. Still appreciate the input.

It drives really well too - except for needing rear shocks. Even though the owner never stated it, I believe this thing has never been off road.
It also came with a service log from DAY 1! every tune up, fluid top up, major work....

interestingly, actually VERY interestingly, this thing has had 6 alternators since the original. First one lasted about 8 years and then 6 replacements. Looking at the invoices they were prob rebuilts but sheesh! Poor quality control, or is there something up with the electrics?

Check the rear leafs, at the front curl where the bolts go thru..14mm I think...anyway when I bought mine, both springs were broken there, I thought the shocks were a bit shitty but it rode nice too, never knew til I changed the rear springs.
You got all the options, make sure you get a high output alternator to run all that shit...[f]...seriously, hope that is not a sign of something else wrong, hopefully cheap alternators. Was a one owner??[36]

might find this handy...http://www.off-road.com/jeep/questions/2004_05/

oh, and it is a 90.

Might be a bit soon to be looking at a front diff, but thanks for the offer.
I think first things I have to look at are lift options, actually the first thing should be losing the running boards. they don't do much for ground clearance.[16]

yep, ditch the "snow sliders".

First thing is to decide what you want your end result to be, then work a budget backwards from that.

That's a sweet looking start fuzzydog... it's always good when the rig starts in working condition before you mod it... less work overall. Looks like whoever owned it before you took great care of it... other than the alternators... That maintenance log will certainly come in handy for you though.

Thanks for the kind words all.
Not sure if I'm gonna go 33" yet, pumpkin - actually, I'm pretty sure that's bigger than I will end up with.
Gonna do a bit of research on lifts and will keep those lift arms in mind.

you could always do this with your XJ:

That's pretty sweet. But I bet there isn't a whole lot of original XJ under the skin....

So I popped it's cherry last night - took it off road for what was probably the first time in it's life. Got a bit stuck, a bit wet, climbed some hills, flung a bit o mud.
man those tires SUCK! and the running boards have GOT TO GO this weekend!

all in all, looks like a good base to start with. I'm definitely happy with the purchase.
