View Full Version : TJ Flares on an XJ

After fitting 32" mud terrains and ar767 rims to my jeep I had some clearance problems, I'm running the re 3.5" superflex lift kit with a 1.5" shackle lift at the rear, On road apart from sticking out past the stock flares 1.5" there wasn't really a problem, but off road these tires were going to rub.
With Bushwacker flares around the $600 dollar mark I decided to fit rear TJ flares front and back, managed to pick up 2 pairs of rear flares for $100.

Here's a pic with the stock flares on 32"s

27465

I had already previously cut and raised the front stock flare,
had to cut abit more to fit the TJ flare, in total probably cut back about 2.5".

27472

On the front right I've fitted a rear left TJ flare, simply attached with nuts and bolts. then vice versa for the other side.

27473

The rear was more of a problem, not alot on a 4 door that you can cut back.

27468

As i don't own a welder at the moment I decided to do 1.5" upcuts about 1" apart but not going through the pinch weld and simply hammer them back.

27469

27470

This really opens out the wheel well

27471

I attached the flare with self tapping screws, and had to cut it for rear door opening.

27474

Time to do the job probably about 16 hours, plus several more hours to work up the courage to hack my body work.
I like the finished result, these flares easily cover the wider tires and still have a factory look to them.

27475

Any questions or advice feel free to ask.

That's the plan, once I can afford to change my gearing, I reckon I could get 35"s on there now. [36][36]

What gears do you want? I had a cherokee and got diffs out of a four banger that had 3.73's cheep.

not bad. I'm putting rear Comanche flares on mine, but they don't give any extra width.

Thanks for the offer, I'm really looking for at least 410's or possibly 456's, I'll also need them to fit my dana 44 rear.
Anybody got any ?

Cool, the TJ fares easily cover my 11.5" wide tires, apparently I've been told that TJ Sahara flares are even wider still.

yep, Sahara and Rubicon flares are an inch wider.

BTW if anybody needs a pair of TJ Sport rear flares I've got a slightly beat up pair for sale cheap.

Nice work there Rob but if you want to run 35's bearing in mind that this is your daily driver then you would need a 488 gear set not the 410's or 456's as they would be better suited to 33's. This would give you alot better fuel economy.

Arnt Sahara flares just coloured to match the vehichle?? I have TJ flares on my XJ right now and Im putting on the rubi flares when i get it all back togeather, I used front flares on the front thoughg Id post a pic but it never works cause im not computer smart. My buddy has 35s on his XJ with a 4.0L and 4:56 the thing hauls ass 4:56 arnt bad for 35s but im doing 4:88s for the 38.5" boggers.

Sahara flares are color to match the vehicle, but thet are also wider. Rubicon flares are black like sport flares but are wider as well. A few random "special packages" had the wider flares as well.

Change of plan for me, I'm doing TJ flares as well.

What did you do where the body steps out? Cut the flare or fill the gap?

I cut the flare, its hard to get right, the TJ flare is made for a flat surface, the XJ concaves, I screwed up the first one, best bet is to make a cardboard template.

Thanks, I'm not a fan of flares either but I didn't want to take the
chance on getting a V.I., I am impressed with the TJ flares though,
I've squished them a few times off road and they pop right back out
again. :D

just wondering what you did in the rear with the xj pinch weld on the body? Did you weld it up or fill with body sealer?
Thx Dave

Would they fit on my Bronco II:D I like these so much better than the metal (or whatever material they r made out of) that just bend and look like crap after they rub anything[36]
