Looking at the 88-90 XJ, how does the interior room compare between the 2 door and 4 door? Is it the same, or is the 2 door a smaller cargo area?

I'm narrowing the hunt down - wanted a 4 door, but now looking at 2

why are you looking between 88 and 90? just curious. i would assume that the cargo area is the same on both the 2-door and the 4-door, but the 2-doors look better.

They are exactly the same inside. The doors are much smaller on a 4-door.

Big plus of a two door is that you can sawz-all the rear fender openings WAY larger. With a 4-door you can only cut an inch or so before the door is in the way. Keeping in mind of course that it is a uni-frame rig and you need to reweld the inner and outer fender together after cutting.

thanks

Halo, I'm looking at the 88-90 cuz it seems they are plentiful and relatively cheap - best so far is a 1990 for $1500 (apparently in good shape but high mileage). as far as I'm concerned mileage isn't a concern since I do all my own work and parts are plentiful too.
My philosophy is to buy the core vehicle as cheap as possible and spend extra money to fix and upgrade to my specs.

For price comparison I paid $1,800 for a 91 with 200,000 kms.
Needed a new front axle ($200 at the wrecker), some brake work ($90), and some paint (4 spray bombs of tremclad)

I've put over $1,400 more into it, but that includes a D44 rear, roof rack, wheels, lights, winch bumper, 4" lift, and rhino liner.

You would be beter off searching for a '91 plus, they came with a better engine, 4.0 high output, also the cooling system was changed to an open system, most of the early XJ's with the closed system suffer with overheating problems, I've just converted my '87 to the new cooling system, I got the rad, overflow bottle, thermostat housing and all the hoses from a 2000 cherokee, haven't had any cooling problems since, next I intend to swap in the 4.0 high output.:D

The newer cooling system is good but for 12 horse I wouldn,t worry about the motor, lots of power in the older ones too...172 horses I think?
