I'm sick of this diff! Have had no luck with the AMC20 pices o crap.

This is the 6th rear wheel bearing to go. I replaced the last diff thinking that the housing was out of round and this will be number three bearing and seal for this one. FUCK!

It's puking out oil and I'm sure it has taken out my brake pads again!

Here is what the last time looked like

hwa, why not go with a ford explorer 8.8, 31 spline, as strong as a dana 60 and you still run the same 5x4.5 bolt pattern or whatever it is? just a thought

you could run the ex housing, with full size shafts shortened(f-150 and bronco was 5x5.5), ive got the breaking strength of the 60 and the 31spline 8.8, and the 8.8 was as strong as the 60, ill try to dig it up

this is what i learnt when i was looking for info on my dana 44, and people got into that the front would blow before the rear on my truck

"on to the 8.8. Do the math and we see that the ford 8.8 has an estimated breaking strength of 6100lbs/ft. Compare to the dana 60 30 spline rear which has an approx breaking strength of 6000lbs/ft.

These formulas are not a set in stone kind of thing because I did not take into consideration deflection related to the axle's design and length which would be damn near impossible to calculate. We could discuss it further if you like but the simple facts are the 8.8 is strong, dana 44 is weak."

edit: and if your afraid of the "c clips" which mpost people are, but ive never had a problem with, they make a c clip eliminator for the 8.8

Squishy

only the explorer that i know of, i think the newer f150's have disc's, but i am not 100% sure which rear ends they have

the newer f-i50's have discs with the 8.8,but they also have that fuckin metric bolt pattern.i suppose the axles could be redrilled,or disks adapted the the earlier ones.i would be inclined to use the explorer one with adapter-spacers.they seem to be strong and effective.

i dont need people to get me,i just need people to get out of my way

Well with all these diff and axel opptions.(expence) you may want to try cleaning out some of the stave mudd i c in there periodicly...[15]

all kidding aside though, you probubly could get away with a axel upgrade or better seal maybe, unless your a hardcore pounder a dana 35 or 44 should be suffic even

just my 2 cents bro...

Just run a 9inch there everywhere and easy to find, gears are cheap and they can take alot of horsepower (not that you have to worry about that).

Just look around for a 9 inch out of an early bronco same bolt pattern 5 on 5 1/2 and they are a little narrower then the pick up one and you can order axles for it instead of custom stuff cheaper or if you want to put big flares try out of an 80's full size bronco:D

If I Agreed with You Then we'd Both be Wrong

there was a guy a month ago selling a dana 44 out of a 86 cj-7,one axle was shot but everything else good for 125 on the island board.I missed it by one person.I have the same problem as you, seal's leaking right and left, you have the one peice axles?Tom suggested to me that on the plate that attches the seal to the diff there is kinda a lip that traps sand mud and shit in there and all it does spin on the axle and the seal and kinda like sand paper it rubs the seal to nothing.so next time i switch the seals i am going to a either drill holes in the bottom of this plate or just use washers and bolts instead of the plate that atteches the seal.hopefully this works Do you have wide track axles or the narrow width?[1b]

Try The 9" The pinion end is supported by a sepparate bearing and you can get a disk setup from an early lincoln!....I found a 44 from an early jeep is a touch narrower but works well without having to go to custom shafts. This is not a wide track axle.

some one may correct me -Im sure Tom knows the answer for sure

If the 20 you have is from a wagoneer thats a full floating with one piece axles already so a lot different then the 20 from a cj !Problem is they are 8 bolt on the flange !So youd have to use waggy axles for the fron ! Not a bad idea as they have a 44 in the front but your gonna end up fairly wide !

i would personally suggest a 8.8 rear for availability, 9 inchers are a lil pricer then you'd think, at least around here they are.

but then you got mismatched bolt patterns. i don't know if you can swap hubs over? from something with the lil bolt pattern, not a domestic dude.
