View Full Version : A few Sledding pics in the Kootenays

It's only been 8 weeks since the last time sledding, and it will probably be the last of the season! The little snow that we found was rock solid, with a layer of ice in the shady spots that provided almost zero traction! Speedy and I got out for a good days ride, at least I had fun, then again, I didn't hurt MY sled!!:D The ride involved lots of deep cross ditches, some with rocks/dirt in the bottom for extra traction, lots of alder to add special pinstriping to the hoods, and a blaring sun that gave me a decent sunburned face even with the chilly wind that occasionally whipped up. This was the first ride that Speedy tagged along with me, and for some reason he didn't mention that he was looking forward to the next! :D

First stop at the base of Mt Neptune with a view of the Arrow lakes valley in background.

Next, we wound our way up through the alder and cutblocks to the base of Mt Mackie where I noticed my sled was overheating. Lack of soft snow for the track to kick up on the heat exchangers combined with tractor like speeds picking our way through the trees were the culprits!

We were going to climb to the top of Mt Mackie for the awesome view, but decided not to considering the "toboggan ride" we would have had coming back down on the icy snow! Instead, we attacked some more bottomless crossditches until we came to this thawed out creek crossing.

After turning around from the creek, Speedy tried to turn his sled into a snow-submarine! This was the first of 2 attempts, the second time I was kind enough not to "break" out the camera!:D

Time for some playing in this barely covered cutblock, too many stumps showing for me to have fun!

Mine is a '97 A/C Powder Special 580, Speedy's is a '97 A/C Powder Extreme 600. The Extreme stands for extremely heavy!!! [15] But, that's only because he got stuck in the cross ditches twice as many times as I did, and he did a much gooder job of it!:D

Bruce, the bear hunting you did, was that up Fauquier, near the Needles ferry? It's easier to pronounce then spell!:D
