View Full Version : The Hayman and Beyond Trip Report

The day promised to be one of the Okanangan's finest. After the first quick meeting at Timmy's @ Reid's Corner, and the second hook-up at Westside's Petro-Can, it was off to Hayman and hopefully beyond.
Meeting many new faces and reuniting with familiar ones, we were all in great spirits. After a quick air-down, we were off to the back way in to Hayman. The winter had been rough on the wash-out, and vehicle after vehicle made the pathway a little more challenging..

To insert a little more info at this stage, BroncoRandy had fallen behind for a quick Pick a Part Fix and had to cross here later in the day. I can only say that I wish that we had footage of his two wheel on the ground-balancing act crossing[22]

Up the road to the first viewpoint, and then off to the Bluff Overlook we encountered some snow and icy spots which sent Taz and I on a complete spin and gave K5 a quick side show.

Sadly, this was the turn-around point of the day. We tried to continue down the road, but sending out the big rigs first, and axle-deep in the snow, we had to turn around. The big question on most minds was the condition of the wash-out. Stopping to pick up some great logs for a bridge,we return to do road work.

Actually, this washout was quickly going beyond " road work " to help trucks get across. It was downright dangerous. The pictures don't show just how bad it was. The drop-off is very, very steep with nothing to stop you for a few hundred feet. Any truck that dropped a wheel into the washout would probably roll a couple dozen times before stopping waaaaaaaaay down at the bottom.

Winch was the second (third?) truck to try going through. Any little movement, and his backend slid further down the washout. There was still four (five?) trucks to go through, and the washout was soft, crumbling, and getting worse with each crossing.

So you see... our road work wasn't a simple case of making a trail easier for less-capable rigs to get through.

Me going through. A bit of a butt-clencher...I knew my back-end would get some air as I went over the bump and I was scared that it would kick over and end up sliding down the washout. That's actually what happened and with a bit of throttle, managed to get the Baby Blazer far enough through the washout, but had to get tugged-out from there.

Normally I would agree with you, but in this case, a challenge can become stupidity.

The first minor road repair easily allowed Taz and the Zuke across, but what happened when Winch made his attempt had the general concensus agreeing that some firming up was required for the safety of all. The bank would continue to break away leaving only dirt-bikes to enjoy what lays beyond, and we can't have that[22]

Nice shots Dave.
The ones of the ice/water holes are great to see. We were too busy breaking trail to get any in.
I have to add that the little Nissan did amazingly well on the trip. Taxidermy is one H**L of a driver. She even crossed that washout like a pro[cheers]I hope to see them out on more runs this spring.
Vinny helped her through some of the snow parts, but all in all-well done.
K5, I will arrange some shots to email you. I will need to downsize some more for you, I had taken over 50.

You would head towards Kelowna. The turn-off to head to the trail is on the Westside...about 5 minutes before you would head down the hill to the floating bridge.
