Was thinking of going sledding today, but got talked into taking the plow off the quad and playing in the snow! Went up the abandoned C&W railbed the follows the Lower Arrow Lake, then turns south to Christina Lake. Temperature was below freezing most of the day, so the snow was like concrete and could go just about anywhere until it warmed up after lunch, then in the sunny spots it was easy to break through the crust.

Second trestle of the 3 we crossed

The remains of a horse some f#&%ing moron attempted to ride across last year. The horse's leg got caught between the ties, fell off the side of the trestle and hung there until it died. Unfortunately, the rider survived the 40' drop to the ground and managed to walk out. Stupid people :(

This part of the railbed used to have 2 enormous rockslides that atvers had laboured for hours to make a trail through. Now that Trails BC :( has taken over the railbed, your tax dollars paid a excavator to come in a make it a highway [V]

After we backtracked out of the Bulldog tunnel, we took off on a side trail to see how far we could make it to the old lookout. We didnt get far, as this was now on the west facing slope, and once we broke through the crust, it was like sugar underneath!

Last stop was checking out the old switchbacks that the trains would use before the Bulldog tunnel was built. These switchbacks are over 100 years old! Built around 1898, and the tunnel was built around 1900. Amazing both are still standing after a century!

Jeepnut, when did you last go through here? And what were you driving/riding? It wasn't passable for the last 5-6 years because of the rockslide, but now after the snow melts, you will be able to drive a Honda Civic from the Paulson bridge to the Shields Ck road.

I DONT KNOW!

The Bulldog tunnel is on the C&W Railbed located between Castlegar and Christina Lake.

We actually broke several off by throwing rocks at them, before driving through! I felt a little bad about bustin off the icicles (now no one else can see them first hand), but the way the weather was changing, the snow would soon be too soft to drive there, and the icicles were melting fast and ready to fall down on their own anyways. Besides, the only tracks to that tunnel were ours. A few old sled tracks, but surprisingly, not one ski our snowshoe track, so I don't think we wrecked them for anyone else. Even after breaking enough to drive through, there were still some hanging overhead, I didn't waste any time going through there! Also, on the western end (the big wall of ice), after we had all walked back from the wall where we took each others picture, this 6' long icicle about 8" in diameter fell where we were standing! Two years ago my son and i rode from the pulp mill to about 20mins pasts that last tunnel with all the ice.then a few day later we drove to the Paulson bridge and rode to that same tunnel. From the Paulson past the watering station and the memorial where the Russians blew up that old train up to the tunnel. It was completely passable then????

I would like to come up and do some riding with you guys this year when the snow brakes.

When you rode from the Pulp mill to the Bulldog tunnel, were you riding mountain bikes or dual purpose motorbikes? It's always been passable on a quad/dirtbike or mountain bike, but there was no way anything bigger then a quad would have driven over the rockslide! I think the rockslide came down about 6 or 7 years ago, and it was passable for a fullsize before that.

The invite is still open for anyone who wants to tour the Kootenays!
