View Full Version : Shifter loose? No more fifth gear?

one night i was driving and all of a sudden my shifter went totally loose. i can still change gears, but i cannot get into fifth anymore, well i can shift into where fifth is supposed to be, but when i shift there, it's like it's going into neutral cause it revs really high. the shifter is totally floppy now. someone has told me that a bolt below the shifter probably popped off? but would that resolve the fifth gear problem too?

i need some expert advice as i'd like to fix it before i put my sami back on the road. (hopefully it's something i can fix myself)

thanks:D

if i recall it is a locating pin(i think it is just a shouldered bolt) that goes into housing section(shift tower) that holds the shifter in. it has been a long time since i had a zuchini so someone else might have a better idea

there is a locator bolt that keeps the shifter from just spinning around that has broken.this is very common with these trannies.pull the shifter boot off,and there will be a circular retainer with three bolts that holds the shifter in.remove this and pull the shifter.there is a bolt in the back of the shifter tower pointing to the front of the vehicle-this is the culprit.they can be bought from a dealership for around 5 bucks.

i dont need people to get me,i just need people to get out of my way

Don't worry about it. Once ya get those 31 inch tires, you wont have enough power to use fifth gear anyway.

Cant be any slower than mine. It comes outta California, so whatever they do to the emissions system makes it even gutlesser. I feel like a[1d] sometimes as semis pass me on the freeway by the uphill section going West outta Abbotsford.
