When I get to a certain RPM around 3400 it's like the power is cut in half. Would a fualty Coil cause the engine to act like that? I just put on a new MSD blaster coil so thats the only thing I can think of

The Coil has good spark but Bob thinks it's the carb going to check it out tonight

Try checking your fuel pressure or it could be that damn chain [27][31][cheers]

fuel filter on POS cutlass plugs up every month or two...runs like that

what fuel line and fuel pump are you using? if its a stock 5/16 fuel line and mech. stock type pump from lordco they're shit. they will pump enough fuel for a 6cyl and thats about it. with a 360 use 3/8 line with a carter mech. sreet pump or a 6psi electric pump. i've run out of fuel many times with stock crap on 304s,360s and 401s. a healthy 360 set up right should set a cj on its rear bumper expecially in a cj5.mike

Over at Bob's and he put a Carter on and the it fixed the problem. Opened up the Holley and everything looked normal but when the Holley was put back on the same problem.

On the Holley could the secondaries not opening or could it be starving for gas because I didn't change the gas lines from when I had the 258 in it

If it was a gas delivery problem why would it not have the same problem with the Carter carb?

I phoned Holley and they said to test to see if the secondaries are opening put a paperclip on the diaphragm shaft up near the housing. Make it snug, so it doesn't fall, but not too tight to stop the secondaries from opening. With the paperclip installed, make a run and see where it ends up on the shaft.


So what I'll do is test to see if the secondaries are opening if they are then run a electric fuel pump to see if that fixes the problem. sound good??

you have to think what happens when you punch it.on a holley all the fuel rushes to the rear of the of the float bowls. on the front bowl you wont have a fuel starvation problem cause the fuel will cover the jets. on the rear fuel bowl the fuel wants to rush to the back of the bowl when you punch it,uncovering the jets.if you fuel system is weak and cant keep the holley fuel bowls full under wot the secondary will starve for fuel first. on a carter on level ground the fuel is always covering the jets. maybe thats why the carter works a little better. try changing the stock fuel line it is cheep and easy. than if that dont work go after the fuel pump.hope this your problem. ive run amcs for the last 18 years and i've had fuel starvation problems with most of them until i learned to upgrade the fuel pump and fuel line. i also pull the fuel pickup out of the tank and weld in 3/8 line or 1/2 line depending of the size and output of the engine.anyway i hope this helps. mike

you might have to change the secondary spring to get it to come on faster.

He did that.

I think the fuel lines are to small.There was a 6 in it last year and now he's running a 360 with a large carb.

they are 3/8ths lines they should be fine. you only need 4-6 psi. put a guage on it and check the pressure.

first the basics.
float levels? set correctly? stuck open or closed?
etc

then start checking systemically.
disable secondary system entirely and see if problem persists.
if yes then it isnt the secondary side.
if no then it is the secondary side.

check the accelerate pump is working properly, should see 2 squirts of fuel from it

I had some crap plug one of my jets in the bowl once

No not yet. I have also been leaving messages with Holley. They said they were going to be replacing the carb but the head guy that said that before Christmas has left the company. I haven’t yet changed the fuel lines but I asked Matt from Jeep Thrills and he said that the fuel lines were the same in the 6 as well as the 8’s

I was also going to try the paper clip trick today and see if they secondaries are opening.

Oh and a new thing now. I have to tap the peddle to bring the RPM’s down all the time now

I've had plenty of problems like what you're describing before, but not with Holleys. I had a Rochester Q-Jet that did exactly what you originally said yours was doing, the first time the float needle had come loose from the float and the second time the accelerator pump crapped out. You could try totally disabling the fast idle, I did it on one carb that I was too lazy to tune. The engine really didn't need the fast idle anyways, so it only helped.
