started sounds fucked. the clicking is the solenoid, but if it is not turning over, the starter is stuck. can try bangin on it to see if something jammed it and hopefully it will break it loose and it will work. if not, time to get a new one. hope that helps.

Sounds like not enough juice in the battery.
Maybe you have a draw or just a shat battery or maybe even just dirty posts, seen that lots. Check battery cables too.[3]

I'LL TRY BEING NICER IF YOU TRY BEING SMARTER.

smash the starter with a BFH, dont be afraid of giving it a good wack, or if you cant hit it directly use a steel rod of some sort to hit it.

Could also be that the alternator kicked the bucket.... Jeep keeps running on battery juice... to check it... start the jeep... then while it is running remove the positive batter cable.... very carefully. If the jeep continues to run, with the cable unhooked... then your alternator is okay... Have the batter tested... if it's either of those things... yeah, probably the starter then. Like crimsen said, bang the starter, maybe it's stuck.... the one in my jeep freezes all the time because it has water in it from the summer... I don't know where you are, but if it is cold enough, this is a posibility.

More then lickley bad contacts on your battery terminals ! The lower amp draw stuff like radio etc dont need a good contact but your starter requires good contacts for enough juice ! Check there first ! --also check you ground connection to your engine block as well !--Bruce

Okay, so I took a look at it last night.

First thing I did was try whacking it with a hammer while she turned the key, still nothing.

Then I tried a bypass wire directly from the battery to the ignition switch on the solenoid (solenoid is on the starter). Same thing, it just kept clicking, so its not the startery relay, key switch etc since I bypassed all that.

Next I tried a jumper cable directly from the batery to the positive input on the starter -- absolutely nothing. So my guess would be the starter itself is gone. Does this sound right?

If it is the starter is it worth tyring to rebuild it? Open it up clean out the mud etc etc...?

ya, probably end up doing that. Those starters don't look like they're sealed too well and Judging by the amount of mud underneath the heep thats probably the problem. Just so long as nothing inside got fucked up. Stupid Stave mud...

Just dont EVER do this on a comp controlled vehicle, especially the digital dash varieties. If its old enough to have a carb is should be ok.

were you useing the battery in the jeep or one from somewhere else? it could still be the battery or the starter. try your jumper cables to the starter from a dif truck, if still no go, ya, pull the starter apart. they are easy, atleas tthe one for my ford is, and yes, mud does get into them.

i totally screwed one of mine up once, shattered an inside piece and ripped some of the brushes out.

Sounds to me like the starter is stuck. I am assuming that it is a standard put it in 2nd gear let up the clutch then get someone to give you a hand to rock it back & fowards at least 10 times, then disengage the clutch & try to turn it over if it does not work repeat the process again if it still does not work you may have to replace the starting motor.

Always broke
11-26-2004, 09:19 AM
The Starter does sound like the problem but it could also be a draw on the battery over night try taking the ground off and putting a test light between the ground of the battery and the connector withe everything off it should not light up if it does pull one fuse at a time until the light goes out then start checking whatever is attached to that fuse . Hope this helps [^][3]

so it wasn't the starter after all. good news for me i just saved a few bucks [36] i guess what happened was one of the posts on the starter/solinoid was touching something it wasn't supposed to be touchin and grounded out.... once that was figured out, put my old starter back in, moved the metal tubing that was touching it over and whadda know... the fucken jeep starts up great.

a kick in the pants finding the problem after hours of fucken around, changin starter, blah blah blah, but hey at least it got figured out and i didn't have to fork out the money for the starter....

THanks everyone for all your help, advice and input. Just another example of why i like it here so much...[36][3]
