i'd say running to rich. I've had this problem twice in my rangers.... driving, then sudden loss of power tons of black smoke, after a few mins it was fine again. Turned out to be the O2 sensor on both

if the o2 dosent fix it,check the map sensor-will also give those symptoms.

i dont need people to get me,i just need people to get out of my way

so the running to ritch has to do with the o2 sensor??? and one more question, the o2 sensors can jus quit working? because it was working fine, then all of a sudden started blowing black smoke one day and running like crap.

I had a similar problem on my 460 turned out it was my temperature sensor telling the computer the motor was cold.. it was running at -40* or somthin like that said ford.. blew alot of black smoke.. hard warm starts and always pinged no matter wut fuel i burned.. but beware.. i replaced the sensor a while back before i got pissed off and braught it to ford.. it was some cheap after market sensor i picked up a lordco. So ford replaced it again and it was fine. when it comes to sensors i would only go with ford parts! hope this helps.. should also get ur computer scanned.. that would help alot. Those motors are EFI rite?

Dont waste your time and $ with bosch replacement sensors either. Theyre absolute junk. IMHO

it should be even easier to fix now with the engine almost in the passenger compartment :D
