Check for codes. No MAF on a 2.9L.

Check your plugs but they shouldn't affect your performance that much, I've run some pretty messed up plugs and never noticed. The major things I'd mention is timing, plug wires, fuel pumps (those years and with the inline pumps are bad for failing. Make sure BOTH your fuel pumps are working properly), filter(s), air filter, and check for vacuum leaks (take a propane torch and just run the tip around the intake (without it being lit!!) and if you have a vacuum leak the propane will cause the engine to stumble). If that doesn't work you may have internal problems....

Buy a repair manual!

Be careful or what you do well, you might be asked to do it again!

Leaking fuel preasure regulator is common on fords, also check coolant temp sensor and map sensor.
