what exactly is backlashing with the dif gears, and the result of not having it exactly set?

79 F150 custom
open dana 44 under 4" BDS coils
welded 9" under 4" arched leafs.
3.57 gears
35x16 tsl boggers
351 m with edelbrock performer 400 intake and edelbrock 600 carb
on board air
np 205 T case
np 435 tranny

setting the back lash is done by moving the ring gear closer and further away from the pinion, to create some movement between the ring and the pinion teeth.

if it gets too tight, it'll run hot and wear fast.

too loose, and your contact pattern will ride high on the tooth, commonly resulting in a broken tooth.

Umm yea what he said,,,, to adjust back lash you move the ring from side to side moving the ring gear closer to the center decreases back lash and out to the side to increase,, usually you want aoub 5-10 thou denpending though,, check the manufatures spec of course

the money is in van, just gotta get ahold of the guy to finish details. been busy and lots of shit going on this week, plus the memory of a goldfish, has been keeping me from getting ahold of em :(

by Xmas i plan on new gears installed and paint job done. wonder if i can keep that going ... :)
