Couldn't talk anyone else into coming out today, so me and the hound explored a road I've been meaning to check out for a while. It's known as the Canex mine and had a small town nearby called Jersey to house the workers and families. Met a hermit living up in the woods who has been there for 12 years, which after talking to him, seems to be about 11 1/2 years too long! Nice guy, but he's missing a few marbles! Wish I had taken a pic of him and his "homestead"!

This is the first adit I saw,

But needed chestwaders to explore!

After I saw this huge tailings pile, I knew I had to be close to the big one!

And I think this is it! I was by myself, so only wandered in about 75', but have been told it goes into the mountain for 4 miles! Next Sunday I'm hoping to bring a couple guys up to find out.

Found this adit a few hundred yards up the road, probably a working of the same vein. Will have to check it out next weekend too.

I'm not sure if this goes into a seperate workings, or the top of a stope from the big mine. Not too stable though.

Didn't like the look of this door, would really suck if it slid shut while inside! Actually, there is an air vent just inside that a person could squeeze through if this happened!

And another old workings, needed scuba gear for this one! I found around 10 different mine tunnels today, and have many roads to check out still.

What the hell was a pool doing in the middle of nowhere! I think this must have been where the town of Jersey was located.

Nice pictures, out side of Salmo eh! I have not been there in years.
If I remember correctly, there is another old city on the other side of that mountain range called Green City. All I can remember was that there was shit load of bears.... If I was back in the Kootenays, I'd be with you on some of those trips. Have you ever checked out huckleberry creek, outside of Ymir? Another good journey to find wiered crap in the bush. Thats were I got the claw foot tub for the house.

Just what I need, another wagon!

No doubt it all belongs to someone, but I have no idea who as the nearest occupied house is pretty far away and the forest access road goes right through the middle of that "scrap yard"! I am going to try to find out who owns the property by checking with the nearest Lands Titles office in Nelson. The Canex mine was shut down in the early 70's and my Dad went to the auction in '73, so I'm assuming that some of this stuff must be leftover that didn't sell back then or someone nearby bought it/scrounged it and stored it here. All this property at one time belonged to either Cominco or Canada Explorations (Canex) so I have some digging around to do. Anyone here work at a government agency of some sort?

Jersey used to be the mining town near the Canex mine which is about 10km east of highway 3 just south of Salmo. The swimming pool in the middle of nowhere is what blew me away!

Allwagon, I've been up Barret ck to Huckleberry hut (probably the place you were thinking of) and yes if your hiking or berry picking there are a lot of bears to watch out for, lots of Grizzlies too.

Yup, it's an '02 400Kodiak with hi/low. Wish I'd waited a couple more months though for the 450. I could really use a locking front diff at times!
It's about a 7 hour drive to Van from here. I like to see all the old equipment at the mines too, so all I take is lots of pics! Well except for the couple bottles of old ketchup this summer, but there are still lots more up there!
BigErn, I have been quadding for 8 years but only started the mine explorations this year, so I am catching up on as much as I can! For the first few years of quadding, the trips would last all day, but we only put on 30 miles since we were always stopping to drink beer!

Kootenaycat, that is so cool to see those pics. I've been there!
Grew up in Trail and me and my 4x friends (I had some back then) explored all those places - Canex, Ymir...all of it.
I remember that pool, too. Never saw the mog, or I'd be driving it right about now..[}:)]I know that a guy in Castlegar pulled a nice little mog out of the bush at Renatta. That was a cool place to go wheeling to as well - making our own railway crossings, cutting trees out of the way...

I'm not sure which mine it is but we drove my toy into one of them- I think it was called the David mine??? Ring a bell? It has a huge opening

Have you ever gotten up to Barrett Lake? - turn left off the highway going from Salmo to Nelson - I think just past Ymir. When I was there it was quite a challenge to get up there, but well worth the fight..

That's cool to here from someone else who's been to these places! Maybe it's your name I saw spray painted inside the pool! Looks like there were quite a few bush parties up there.

You must have been into Renata quite a while ago if you were crossing the tracks. I did that with my Dad about 25 years ago in a stock '75 GMC 1/2 ton! No way you'd ever do it now without lockers! The run into Renata from Bull Dog is a good run, not hard for a quad, but open diffs would never make it back out, into renata ok, but not back up! Would make a nice loop going down to the lake, then up to either Edgewood or Grandforks. I've gone up the railway from the Dam past Celgar, down into Renata, then over to Burrel Ck north of Grandforks on the quad, a 250km round trip!

I've never heard of the David mine, but there are thousands of mines around here. The Canex by Salmo is big enough to drive into. Going back there Sunday.

Been into Barrett Lake once on the quad, that was over 5 years ago and the trail was basically a dry creek bed. Lots of rocks! That's a nice loop on the quad too. We went to the 2nd Relief mine, then up over Dominion Mt., passed Huckleberry hut and Barrett lake, down to Ymir, then came back on Stewart pass.

Where you living now?

Fuzzydog
10-15-2004, 07:49 PM
Nah - wasn't me spraying my name in the pool. a bit too far for bush parties from Trail - we used to go to Fort Shepherd - ahhh, memories.
I haven't been to Renata in at least 15 years, probably more, but even back then it was a challenge. Some pencil pushing desk jockey government employee used up every brain cell he/she could muster and decided to put huge trenches on either side of the railway crossings. we had to forge our own way around through the bush - but the good old 82 toy pulled through. I think I went once in my landcruiser as well, but that was a walk in the park for that tank. A bunch of us convoyed down there one weekend and camped out on the beach - good times.
Me and a friend once rode our motorbikes (his CR 500? and my XL 350) down the tracks from the dam just past Celgar to just past the tall highway bridge on the way to Christina Lake - that was an awesome ride. I worked at CPR at the time so I knew for sure no trains were running. Have they deactivated that whole line now? I thought I heard that somewhere....
I remember the dry creek bed into Barrett Lake - had to air down the tires to get through on those boulders. Lots of porcupines up there. I told my dad about it and one day he asked me to take him up there. Big mistake. We got up alright, hung around a bit then headed home. On the way down he sez "where does that road go?" -pointing to a fork in the road going right. I said "let's find out" This was at about 3:00 in the afternoon. we got home at about 1 am after bouncing the truck off the road, and ripping a valve stem out of a tire (spun against a rock). If only we'd had digital cameras back then....
I remember that 2nd relief mine but not exactly...it was a looooong time ago.
I'm up in Williams Lake now, been here 11 years. started a family and all that so wheeling/camping took a back seat. The kids are older now so I'm building this Landrover camper to get back in the groove.

The original road into Renata, taking the Paulson Detour road, cross tracks twice before climbing up to the lookout, is still there, but a new logging road has pretty much wiped out most of it. Still a nice ride on the quad/dirtbike. The easiest way into Renata/Bulldog lookout is the Bulldog road just east of the Paulson summit.

The C&W railway from Castlegar to Christina lake has been deactivated for about 14 years now. A guy I know got killed while CPR was taking the tracks out. He had a V-8 CJ and was getting air off the ditches in the railbed, then lost control, flopped and he wound up under the Jeep. Should have been wearing a seatbelt, the 2 passengers walked away. It's gated to anything bigger then a quad at the dam now, but if you take Sheilds road near Nancy-Greene lake you can access it and could drive all the way to Christina lake if not for a couple rockslides. Unfortunately Trails BC has recently taken ownership and is trying to make it non-motorized only just like the KVR in the Okanagan. They will never stop us from using it though, as it is such a remote area, and lots of quad access from different logging roads. There will always be a way to find a route around the gates!

Those pics bring me back, man!
These freakin non-motorized rec only types are really starting to tick me off! I don't mind sharing the woods with them, but they want the whole damn thing for themselves. We had a great area here for wheelin, dirt bikin, etc and now it's all gated off and for non-motorized use only. The sad part is that there are now fewer people using it than when it was all open to anyone[16] WTF is that? progress?
I didn't realize they had pulled up the rails on that section - I guess you don't have to worry about trains coming anymore, eh? Why do you call it the C&W? - it was still CPR when I was there...?

Originally (1900) it was called the Columbia & Western Railway.

Update Oct 17, went back to the Canex with 6 others and walked into 2 seperate mines, first one went in about 3600' and it continued on even further, the second one we were in about 4500' when we found the end. If you weren't worried about the vibrations of the engines, you could drive a quad right to the end!
