Magna gets a Tow Job

Sun was shinning, faces beaming
The new paint from her fixed dint a gleaming.

Meeting at the Mickey Dís
The excitement almost had me on my knees.

Tazuki leading us away,
Off we go for some 4x play.

Crimsen hoped on in the back,
Myska pup snuggled in his lap.

Off we all go,
Never a thought of havin to tow.

The sky was blue, trees a changing
Looked a head seen Sweet Pea, Al and Raisin.

Reached a landing seen a puddle,
This is where baby blazer made her stand.

Screw you she thought as she hiccupped and stopped,
Going through that puddle Iím not.

Way to go Magna what have you done!
I started to mumble, your wrecking my fun.

Sure shit, we had a problem,
Fuel pump was the goblin.

Biggest Al gives us a tow,
Off to Belgo dam we go.

So to work the guys go,
Pulling the fuel pump and so.

After an hour were back on the trail,
I look over and see a big smile from Gail.

Off again to have some fun.
Ideal lake here we come.

Grizzly lake gave us a scare,
Next thing we knew magna was pulling out his hair.

I wanted to call her a dirty witch,
Instead I drank a beer and scratched my itch.

That baby beast had made up her mind.
We werenít going no where this time.

Sjx500 even had a look,
Good thing she had a tow hook.

Tazuki pat her on the hood,
And away he pulled her real good.

12km we had to crawl,
That zuki doing it all.

No power steering, no power brakes,
It sucks when a battery breaks.

Free wheeling down Beaver lake road.
We watch as Baby, Magna, and Crimsen fly.

Myska and I ride with Tazuki and Gail
My heart is pounding, and I pray
Dear gods donít let baby blazers brakes fail.

A quick stop at Crimsenís, his battery goes in.
The motor starts to sing.

Youíd think that it was a shitty run,
But believe it or not we all still had fun.

Pics to follow shortly.

Yeah, yeah....[:I]
OK, this wasn't a shining moment for the Blazer. It seemed like if it wasn't one thing wrong, it was another. We've never had a day off-road where the Blazer gave us any problem that took more than 10 minutes to fix, but today she made up for it.....in spades.

The saddest way to end a day before it really begins is with something stupid sidelining you. In this case, the final straw was a completely toasted battery. No jump start in the world was gonna fire her. The worst of it is that about 4 weeks ago, I took the battery back to where I bought it and told them it was toast and being under warranty, I wanted a replacement. Of course, they wouldn't just hand over a new one without testing the "dead" one. So I left it with them and the next day they returned it to me declaring that it was fine. They had charged it all night and load-tested it in the morning.[13]

Although the dead battery was the saddest way to end the day's wheeling, the most humiliating way to end your wheeling day is hooked to the back of a little Zuki for 30 clicks. Thanks for the tow Taz[:I]

A steep, muddy little ditch that I couldn't even climb out of[:I][:I].
Damn open diffs. Sheesh, even for the few moments that I was actually under my own power, I wasn't able to do much. Oh the shame.

Even with the limited amount of wheeling time today, I still managed to add some new wrinkles. The rear bumper started the day nice and straight. Notice the red wire coming out the back window and disappearing under the tailgate? That's now the hotwire to my fuel pump. Damn electrical problems haunted me today.

I suppose that I should comment on the previously mentioned "hill thing".

The "event" occured after the Baby Blazer died for the final time.

When it died, we didn't think that it was the battery at first...after all, it's been cranking fine for the past few weeks since the Baby Blazer's resurrection. It'd cranked fine today too, with no indication that anything was wrong with it. Trying to start the truck didn't really point to the battery either...more like a dead short somewhere.

After a few minutes of unsuccessful troubleshooting, we decided to put the jumper cables on it. Bingo!! Dead, dead, dead battery. We left the little Zuk running with the cables attached while we took a break. Still no luck. This thing was not going to jump start.

Then, in one of my more brilliant moments I decided that maybe we could bump-start it. Bump-start an automatic?? I've never really tried that, and I didn't really think it could be done, but hey...clear thought processes were NOT one of my greater assests just then. After all, there have been times in the past when I've 'accidentally' turned the ignition off while driving, and simply turning the key on and feeding power back to the system resulted in the engine firing back to life again.

Let's pretend for a second that I didn't bother to think through this logic train thoroughly...in fact, no pretending is needed. I already told you that I wasn't exactly thinking. It was more a matter of..."Let's try it and see what happens":D Ten seconds of thought would have told me that at those other times, I had a functioning battery in the vehicle.

So I get Taz to drag me to the top a steep hill at the top of the gravel pit. The total length of the run is about 200 yards of gravel and is....well.....steep. So we get to the top via a much less steep road and just as we crest the top, my tug strap falls off while I'm still rolling. My compatriots in Taz's vehicle in front call to me that the strap fell off, so without further thought (or again, without any previous thought) I cranked the Baby Blazer left and pointed her down the hill.

The moment I nosed-down, Baby Blazer took off like I was being pushed by a jet engine. Now, although I knew that I hadn't just been dropped from a plane at 30,000 feet, at that moment I'd have bet good money that I was at free-fall speed.

There is another factor that will soon come into play in this comedy of errors.
For those that don't know me...I am prone to fits of uncontrollable laughter....usually at the most inopportune times. At these times, I am usually rendered momentarily useless and the simplest tasks become a monumental effort of will. I have no control over when these fits of laughter will strike, nor how long they will last....all I can do is ride them out and pray that I don't drop something heavy on my foot in the meantime.

Naturally, within a couple of seconds of my cannon-launch down the hill, something must have struck me as particularly funny about the situation in which I now found myself. Perhaps the realization that the situation in which I'd just placed myself was ludicrous, and no other intelligent, reasoning soul would ever willingly attempt such stupidity. Too late now....

I was doing Mach .8 and gaining speed with every passing second on a steep, slippery slope of gravel. Who wouldn't find this funny???:D[:I]:D I know I must have...because I picked that moment for a hysterical laughing fit. I had just enough brain power left between fits of laughter that I actually remembered to turn the key on and put it in gear.......Nothing. The engine didn't fire (you didn't really expect it to did you???) and I was still picking up speed. Objects in my peripheral vision were speeding by like the Maltese Falcon hitting hyper-speed.[aahh]

Now I'm laughing uncontrollably while I'm speeding/slamming/bouncing/careening down the hillside. Ruts and moguls are launching me airborne but at least I'd had the foresight to put on my seatbelt, so I was firmly planted in the seat of the fastest bucking bronco this side of a space-shuttle on takeoff.

At one point, when my tearing eyes cleared, I actually managed to turn the key off, put the shifter back into neutral....and (DUH!!) actually tried to bump start it again. Back on goes the key, back into drive goes the shifter. When the engine didn't fire this time, I think my pea-brain actually registered suprise. I was certain it would work this time!![16] Yeah, that's right....I'm a College graduate.

Now my 5 ticket ride is drawing to a close, all I gotta do is bounce/launch through the last five three-foot deep ruts and cross the pond at the bottom. The uphill portion on the other side of the pond will definately stop me....if the pond doesn't!!

I finally roll to a stop on the far side of the pond, still laughing hysterically....if for no other reason than the sudden realization that throughout the entire ride, I hadn't bothered to touch the brakes once!!!!

I looked out my window behind me to see Taz driving up....laughing his ass off..........at me?

Good stories! Too bad you didn't have the hill run on video! Must have been a huge brain fart when you decided to bump start an automatic! I think the first autos had an oil pump on the output shaft, so you could bump start them, but not todays cars!

Check your charging system. Chevy uses the charging signal to keep the fuel pump on in case of an accident. If it doesn't see a charge from the alt, it shuts off the fuel pump! Which would also be why your battery keeps going dead and tests ok for the shop. And even if you did have a standard trans, if your battery is stone dead, chances are it wouldn't start because the Chevy alt needs a 12V field to start charging, which you need to run the fuel pump and ignition.

I'm hoping that you're pulling on my little weenie again, but if you're not......I can't afford to buy any parts until next payday. If you want it done sooner you'll have to buy parts, and I'll reimburse you.
As far as labour....if you want this weekend is fine. Any sooner, and the best I could do is a couple of hours after work. You're welcome to my carport too.

The "whatever else we find busted" worries me[aahh]....ya liable to say that your tow broke everything else except the cupholders.:D...and even those need replacing.
