Hey!
I am just wondering, does a 1983 SJ Tranfer case bolt right into a 1988.5 suzuki samurai? Would I need to modify anything or just bolt it in? the gearing is 3:1 right? and whats a good price for one?
does lower gearing also make my high go slower too? or does high stay the same?

Thanks

Matt

88.5 Suzuki Samurai, Tintop, 3" lift springs, drop links all around giving about .5" more lift, almost 4" total
currently on 27" super swampers

It bolts to the same mounts but the flanges are different. I tried this years ago and if I remember correctly, the rear flange from my 87 wouldn't even fit on the 83 t-case splines.

Re read my post. It might work, might not.

Maybe James T can shed some light on this.

The only info I could find on the 83 case is that there is no spot for a 4wd light switch. I seem to remember something about the flanges not fitting, or not fitting well (tight fit)?? Not sure

Kirk out;)

I have heard that the 83 cases are pretty weak you are going backward from a Sammy case!

Hey!
Is the 83 really weaker? will it make a difference?
I just want to go to alittle lower gearing so I can run 31s
I think the 83 gears are high reduction = 1.50
and low reduction = 2.511

whereas the 88.5 is high = 1.409, low = 2.268
is this correct?
will I be able to run 31s?

Thanks

Yes it is weaker. Run it and if you break it just put back in your 88.5

If you were to get a 4:1 t-case that will offset your gearing enough to run 31's
