I just bought a 89 yj 2.5L with 31's with 160k,
when I try to engage 4 high she makes a mean clunking sound and will not engage ?
the front drive shaft has a bit of play, I just changed the diff fluid and the transfer case fluid.
The front diff fluid was clean and the gears look fine?

Any help would be awsome.

All YJ's have a vacuum diconnect. The fork inside the
disconnect is known to wear out not allowing it to
enguage all the way. The clunk you are hearing is probably
the fork jumping off the inner right side shaft. New
forks are available for a reasonable price and are fairly
easy to change. Good luck[8D]

Just do yourself a favor since its a new (to you) vehicle , an check all the simple stuff first before throwing in a new T-case or whatever.
