Hello all! I went out to Slocet hotsprings this weekend and on my return i started to hear a "crack" coming from the rear end of my ranger.. and then usually after the cracking noise you can hear a sracping sound only when the truck is under excelleration. If anybody knows a possible problem that would cause this please let me know! Thanx!

i thought of u-joints but wouldnt if the were damaged enough to make that noise, wouldnt they have already broken?

they're not "broken" if the truck still moves under its own power, but the needle bearings inside the cups most likely dont have any grease on them and are starting to disintigrate .you will know for sure as soon as you take out your driveshaft. if they are dry and making noise you will want to replace them , about 15-20$ each .

U joints will work under light load for a pretty long time aftyer they are totalled. It's also possible that they have welded themselves to the center and are now rotating in the cups. This should be looked at before it takes out your shaft or yoke.

Double check the rear springs/u-bolts as well........ you do have some decent axle wrap if I remember right.;)

just lie under the shaft, and push up and down, really hard, if it moves, then it will be the u joints, it is a good way to check your pinion berringa aswell, just make sure the truck is in neutral, (block the tires if neccesary, just jam a suzuki sidekick under the front tires, and it wont go anywhere).
If ya still cant find the sound, While the truck is off, leave it in gear/park, and rock the truck back and fourth, really hard, that might do it, That is how me and wade are still trying to find out what is making all the clunking noises under his truck, Lot of clunking, just cant find where it is comming from.

SHHHHHHH, i keep trying to convince Dexter to do this for me, it did work on that movie cape fear! I'd say its a 50/50 success rate. Ive found my problem, my rear diff is shot, it now matches the front nicely. 87ranger, if you still hear it under hard accelleration its pretty likely to be u-joints.

Hey come on now Sure it makes a few wierd noises its a factory option. But I would have to say a u-joint, I've heard that one a few times, like last weekend:(
