How does the jeep rating system work,[2] those stupid commercials keep on saying that jeeps are "trail rated" but have jeeps driving on a paved road and then over a fallen tree.[35] does this mean its rated for fallen trees on paved roads and not on dirt? what the hell is there rating system all about? I want to know how my sammy is rated by the "jeep trail rated" system.[!]jeep

The new Jeep "Trail Rated" badge indicates that every Jeep 4x4 has been designed to perform in a variety of challenging off-road conditions identified by five key consumer-oriented performance categories, including Traction, Ground Clearance, Maneuverability, Articulation and Water Fording.

"Through a combination of natural and controlled field tests, as well as computer-simulated environments, Jeep Trail Rated provides a repeatable and consistent measurement of off-road performance for all Jeep vehicles," said Bell. "As the Jeep brand expands, Trail Rated will help us ensure that our legendary 4x4 capability remains a cornerstone of the Jeep brand."

"The Jeep brand continues to deliver on the promise to provide rugged, versatile vehicles with authentic 4x4 capability,"

o, and other than that clip, ya, its just a bunch of BS - just an excuse for them to get into the light-suv market... and differentiate between an SUV and a real 4x4

Fixing the problem.....Stacking rocks? [f]

Seriously though, the idea of whether a rig could get through the Rubicon was getting so hard to quantify that Jeep instead hired a US govt certified testing firm to devise a set of standard tests for 4x4s in the areas of Traction, Ground Clearance, Maneuverability, Articulation and Water Fording.
The idea is that they must both pass the tests and score higher than any other vehicle in their class/price range.

Well let's see.
90 degree approach and departure.
Something like 8 inches of adjustability in the suspension.
High torque electric motors at each wheel provide the same power as a small block chevy.
Smooth underside.
No drive shafts at all.

It's just too bad that it looks like somebody chromed one of King Kong's snot bubbles.

does it actually run or just a paper mache concept vehicle?
electric motors? what powers them?
nice idea but just doesnt work
battery technology is not up to the task of electric vehicles
burning fossil on board to generate electricity is inefficient

it's certainly true that current ([:I]) battery tech is a long way from being able to power a vehicle for real use, but I think it's a cool idea. Who cares if burning gas to run the motors is inefficent, think of the advantages.
Portal hubs with 4" of lift is the rage right now, so how about motors mounted right inside the hubs. Portal the hubs hugely and lift the suspension as high as you want with no U joint of drive shaft angles to worry about, and you can run the left and right tires opposite directions "tank style" and pivot 360 degrees in place. Hydraulic control over the suspension lets you literally step a tire up a ledge, and you have 4 driving wheels all the time so it's the same as being spool front and rear. Plus the electric engines have huge torque so changing tire size would not be a problem. You could run 33s during the week and 39s on Sunday with no gearing issues.
If Jeep had any sense they would have built two of them, the bubble mobile (which was chosen because it would get people talking) and one with a flatty body on it. For that matter they could be built with interchangable bodies. It's your wife's mini van on week days and your flatty on the weekend.

Are u guys on crack???????
WTF u mean electricity wont work?? anyone heard of the toyota PRIVA? or that honda hybrid, there both (3rd yr) production cars running on batterys.they have a small 3or 4 cly gas motor for big hills an charging the batterys while driving, batterys are also charged with kinectic energy system that uses braking energy ect to recharge.

Stupid thing is if they put in a small diesil they would probley double there mpg which is 4Ltrs per 100k I think. VW TDI is about same or better.

An electric motor would kickass in 4x4 as its instant, full power an torque no lag no nothin just straight power to drivetrain.Dosnt need mechanical/eletric parts( fuelpumps, exhaust, parts, RADS ect ect)Also no noise.

only problemI could see would be water crossings an gettin the motor wet.

electricity DOESN'T work, not "won't" work
battery technology just isnt there despite huge amounts of government grant money to places like Ballard Power
