Little White Closed?
On behalf of the Okanagan Jeep Club I have been corresponding with some hikers who frequent the Little White area near Kelowna. Our club in the past has had scheduled trail runs there maybe once a year. There are two trails to the top that I know of but the one that most people take is really nothing more than a really really bumpy road. This road with it's close proximity to Kelowna means it is frequented buy the same kind of dumb asses that give 4x4's a bad name on easily accessed trails throughout the province. Little White is quite open and it is easy for someone at the top to see the very worst our sport has to offer without much effort given the chance. I know there are some here who wheel in that area. I am by no means pointing any fingers I am only sharing some info I have received. I have been told that new ditches have been dug and signs have been posted and apparently already torn down. My info is about a month old now and I have heard nothing further.

Hi Shawn,

Your response to Reg Volk (Friends of the South Slopes) was forwarded to me and I would like to take this opportunity to bring you and your club up to date on the status of the Little White Mountain area. The area became a park in July of last year as a result of recommendations of the LRMP process. Myra-Bellvue was one of several new parks designated throughout the Okanagan and along with park designation comes a new set of rules.

A draft Management Direction Statement was produced with input from stakeholders and that document now provides guidelines as to how the park will be managed. The Little White Mountain area of the park and access to it is now park land and unauthorized vehicles are not allowed. If you would like to receive a map of the park boundaries I would be happy to send you one. Please provide a mailing address as the information is not available electronically at this time.

I realize your concerns for access and the respect of the environment, however with park status the rules have changed. Your club will have to seek other destinations for your tours. Unfortunately this is not an issue of debate as the park is protected by the Park Act.

Thank-you for your understanding and we look forward to your support of all provincial parks in the province.

Sincerely,

Greg Betz
Area Supervisor
East Okanagan

I am like anyone else, I like to look at ourself as good four wheelers. Given that the jeep club thinks we are a bounch of beer drinking idiots. I will stand up for us and see what is going on with this park shit. But like it is going to stop me from wheeling up there? Nope, not a god damn chance.

I have yet to see someone hike up there besides myself. And I make quite a few trips a year up there. As for wheeling up there this year I think we are done anyways for the season up there. Can you say snow soon.

I will treat this like we have in the past. Tread Lightly, and let the others tear out the signs and gates and play dumb. Y do I play dumb with shit like that. Because I like to wheel up there. THats Y.

Not to mention it is the last great rock site in the Kelowna area.

Oh and thanks for bringing this to our attention Al.

Liberal Goverenment is killing us.
