OK this was the end of the adventure but I'll post a few pics each day. We're still sitting in the ferry line up.

Yesterday morning I went out for the last fish of the trip. Having got a good tip on where the salmon are thick I set out with high hopes. It's really sketchy to get to when the wind blows but at dawn it's good for a couple of hours.. just don't get caught there when the rollers with white caps start.

Here is a picture at 5:30am. I lost sight of land until the sun broke through. This was also just before I caught the 132cm 70lbs halibut.

I wasn't fishing for halibut so my spear was put away and my rope was under my battery. I was fishin for salmon on a barbless hoochie 36 feet down.

Then the fun began

The reel was spinning line out like it was angry so I knew I had something big. The battle went back and forth till I brought it up to see the size..pretty sure I said FUCK ME when I saw the size of it.. again I was on a barbless hook and time was running out. One snap of the head and he would be gone.

Now onto the spear.

All nicely separated and tucked away with my rope in the back under the battery. I had to hold tension on my rod, battle the fish still as it went down a couple more times. I was able to sort that out bring up the Hali and line the spear up. Normally I would have used a float on the spear but I had it tied to the boat. Pretty interesting feeling when he headed back down again giving my 14' boat some good yanks.

When I got to shore Ann said "what the hell" and we spent the next 4 hours cleaning, filetting, and vacuum sealing this monster plus a salmon a ling cod and a couple of sea bass

It was a great day of fishing

08-07-2016, 04:19 PM
Think the freefer is in Home Depot parking lot it only works part time though

08-07-2016, 05:22 PM
lol yeah we suck but had no choice

08-07-2016, 06:11 PM
Are you allowed to process fish in the field how do they know how many you have and the size?

Hey Ann
08-07-2016, 06:22 PM
Yes you are allowed to process out fishing. They have a list of specifics for transporting your fish. It really sucked for the big halibut. You have to leave the tail on one filet , the pectoral fin on another, skin on and not more than 7 pieces. I had to get very creative with the vacuum sealing as some pieces had to be folded over cause it was too wide for the bags!

08-07-2016, 06:50 PM
now we have to figure out how to get them into smaller pieces. I'm thinking of getting a jigsaw to cut frozen and re seal them.

We have never been checked, sometimes I think I should just cut and seal on the beach and take a chance.

....of course the other way is have more fire and fish and chip nights
