I am looking for info on Landcruiser transmissions. I have a customer with an 82 that has a 305 tpi adapted to the toyota 4spd. he wants a 5spd and i am wondering what would be the best way to go. Toyota 5spd, or NV4500?

Toy 5 speed isn't as strong as nv4500 and will be tougher to find as well
And depending on rear diff if it's off set or centered The adaptor nv 4500 to toy case is pricey and a Chevy4500 is wrong side drop on t case for front toy diff
At least the one I have is drivers side drop and need pass side drop for toy either way prob not a cheap swap

The rear diff is offset, that is one problem I'm not sure about. would it be a problem to have the drive shaft on an angle. My brain tells me nv4500 and 205 t case. He found a toyota 5spd for $2000, but the info i find is that 5 gear is pretty weak. especially when you have a small block and 33's.

I'm pretty sure Advance makes an adaptor kit for the NV to Cruiser case. That would be the way I would go as the NV is already a bolt up to the SBC and definately tougher than any Toy offering. The cruiser case should be stout enough for the SBC from what I have heard.

what about an overdrive unit or just taller gears in the diff?

Well I blew the case out of my fj40 last year the split case is suppose to be stronger some guys have run the driveshaft angled
Others have built a hybrid mini cruiser diff
Basically cutting a mini housing and a cruiser diff up
To use mini truck axles and a cruiser center section centered
Gets rid of the c clips And gets you parking brake on axle
I'm assuming the 82 still has a driveshaft park brake
Now if I could just find a 205 for the nv 4500 I have that big block would have a cruiser home

The other alternative might be a Dana 300 case they are a offset rear output

300 is a centered rear.

Bruce if you have a chev NV4500 all you need is a round pattern chev 32spline 205

Land cruiser cases and v8 don't mix well ... The cruser cases are week , I have a 350/nv4500 mated to a cruiser case with advance adapter goodies in one of my cruisers and the case didn't last long before it tore it self apart

But How hard of a wheeler is it going to be or just a pavement cruiser ? And how tame is the 305 lol (almost all 305's are tame) .. Either way might be trouble but all depends on the driver [cheers]

Still think you need a adapter or spacer (but could be wrong) this is what I have in my green cruiser and the setup I bought has a spacer/adapter [cheers]

I believe it is just a spacer that you have. If I remember right the round pattern 32 spline chebby 205 has a very long input spline sticking out. Also as I have run into on the D300 the input bearing retainer can be to deep as well. I had to put an 1/8 inch spacer on my setup for the bearing retainer.

I was thinking Dana 20 then lol
Yes round pattern 205 and there is a way of doing it and keep it short
Can't remember if it's cut input down or swap it with another input
All I have is racetrack cases

it would be D18 you're thinkin of but those things are gettin kinda hard to find as I think they were only in production up till the early 60's. Followed by the 20 then the 300

Can't remeber for sure from when we had B's 4L80 205 set up. I know his 205 had a long input, we had to swap from the 205 Tcase adaptor on the 4L80 to a 241 adaptor to put his black box in. The 205 one was about 3.5 - 4 inch long and the 241 was only about 2 - 2.5. But I can't remember how deep the splines went on the 205 input.

Amc 360 and th400 with a quadra track:rain cloud
We won't talk about how reliable that abortion was
