View Full Version : transmission Q:

I have a 87 xj with a aw4 and a np242 t-case
the case snapped the out put shaft..I pulled it and its 21t spline count
I found these are in 87-89xj and 4 banger models..and alittle tough
to locate...
Q:) can I swap in a newer aw4 tranny with a 23 spline ? Is there any difference
or will it bolt right up...I figure I'm in this boat now so why not upgrade to a stronger drive line and parts are everywhere for a 23t...
any info would be appreciated ..

Thanks in advance...

should be able to swap it out with a newer one, but instead of the 242 why not put the more common 231 in it when u put the new tranny in, I think if you stay pre 95 for transmissions you will be ok, but just do a good once over on the new trans just in case,

Ok cool I couldn't see much of a difference ..if I put in a 231 will I need the linkage and floor plate? They're the same just the 242 has an awd option for slippery conditions..no

23 spline AW4 is shorter than the 21 spline by 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 ish inches and OBD2 transmissions 94 1/2 and up, are different electronically than OBD1 versions

Oh good to know..is the wheel base the same? If I find someone parting one out and grab the tranny/tcase and rear shaft It'll be good or will I need the front aswell?

sorry for all the Q's just weighing my options
