When i am accelerating and or driving down the road i hear a loud whining sound from the rear end. When i let off the gas/put in neutral it stops. Does this mean my rear diff is shot/ on its way out or? Its got fluid in there i know that.

Sounds like it just your pinion bearings. Not your whole diff.

Are these berrings ones that need to be pressed on and off or?

Good choice phones and the internet are way more effective diagnostics tools than actually looking at and driving it[f]:D I wouldn't suggest a 6 hour drive to get it fixed. If the pinion lets go it will end up deep in the ring and then everything is F..U.B.A.R.. Could just be the pinion nut backing off. The outer bearing can be changed with 3rd in place.......as long as you are comfortable using a non matching exsisting race. Other than that, pull your axles and remove the third. Take to mechanic and have rebuilt.

Ya. Pretty much exactly what tinker said, especially with the pinion nut, what about ujoints?. And yes the inner pinion bearing would need to be pressed off.

or, just spend $50 on a used 3rd and call her done
but i would also check the axle bearings....

troubleshooting online is like giving a haircut over the phone. The jerk in me says let it develope and when it falls apart you will know the cause.. But on a serious note take it apart and figure it out. have you done anything besides check the oil? was there any metal in the oil? have you pulled your lower plug you see whats built up on the magnet?
