View Full Version : Charge or not to charge

Going to add a winch to my trailer with its own battery to run winch and maybe some lights, my question is can I just hook the positive to the AUX connection(which charges the trailer brake away battery) or do I need some sort of relay or or something that stops the battery from overcharging. And if I'm using the winch I don't want to draw power from the little wires in the truck wiring harness.

Or should I just Trickle charge the battery and not have it connected to the truck.

I'm not going to run 100ft of wire from front to back of truck

jay i'm putting one on my trailer too i'm running cord from the front to back and

winch on a receiver mount so it can come off the trailer when its sitting on the side of the road or wherever

friends have done the battery way and found the battery is always dead from sitting

You could use one of those jumper packs on your trailer and wire in a cheap inverter then you could just run it off the 12v in trailer plug:dontknow:

I was planning of a reciever mount too, thats just alot of heavy wire.

Maybe a solar charger hooked up when not in use?

the wire is not going to weigh your truck down lol

it is a dodge so u never know

So how is the ferd running lol
Jj there is a charge line in the trailer plug on your truck
And you are required to have a battery on your trailer to run the break away
But I wouldn't use the winch with truck plugged in
We mounted a tool box in buddy's with the winch mounted inside it with a battery and mounted a small solar panel on it worked great
If anything I would buy the warn rear winch wireing set up
And wire the truck then you can use the receiver mount winch
On the truck or the trailer
the loose battery is a pain in the ass and usually dies about the time
You have the busted jeep half on the trailer

put a battery on the trailer with a solar panel to keep it topped up when not hooked to your tow rig and supply it 12v thru the 7 wire plug

Other thing if yea have to room is a tool box with the battery and winch mounted inside to protect them and u can mount the solar panel to the top of it but each there own

use a wind turbine..........to charge it.....:D
.
.
.20- 30-ft tall will catch the wind nicely.when trailer is parked.........
and at hiway speed that bastard should spin at a terrific speed giving u optimun chargeing:cool:
..
.
.

.
.maybe a hamster on a wheel.. as the lil bastarrd runs on his whell itll send an electrical charge to ur battery...
hamsters are cheap too..
way less than a solar pannel....
and u can eat him when he runs himself to exhaustionfood
win win on that one

put a battery on the trailer with a solar panel to keep it topped up when not hooked to your tow rig and supply it 12v thru the 7 wire plug

do this and just unplug it from the truck when winching

Thats all I did with my trailer. power to the 7 way will charge the battery up, if you run the winch with it plugged in you might trip the circuit breaker (truck wiring should have a circuit breaker in line ) but it will reset itself.

I've never had an issue with running my m8000 doing it this way on my trailer.

there are a couple times Ive had to do an excessive amount of winching when it's been mounted to the trailer, I just ran a set of jumper cables to the trailer battery for those times)

edit: the power to the 7 way isnt only meant to charge a break away battery, it also charges the batteries in travel trailers and such, some of which run dual batteries. so charging a full size battery definitely shouldn't be a concern....

I have a 9000lb winch on my trailer with its own big battery that charges threw the trailer plug. Battery always stays charged but i tow at least once a week so its always getting topped up

I built this so now it can go on the trailer or the truck or anybodys truck, fully mobile with the jumper cable cords

Charging the battery's off the truck power is fine
but i don't like the idea of the winch load on the truck charge wire the newer dodges are only a 30 amp fuse not a circuit breaker

That's not a bad deal for that wireing kit

exactly. unplug when winching. dont want to pop fuses.

with that craddle you can store in indoors when not in use

Ok you can use a winch battery to run your breakaway system as well. Just use your charge wire in your 7 pin. I have seen lots of trailers at work that do it and it works well.

vajayjay
02-03-2014, 06:19 PM
Its done, my 7 wire charges the built in battery in the breakaway and I will use the truck or whatever the winch is connected to to run the winch, might put a 12v plug on the 7 wire for a plug in light though :D

Reeseman
02-04-2014, 09:34 PM
You can just run your breakaway off the winch battery too. No need for 2 batterys.

Reeseman
02-04-2014, 09:36 PM
Then you can mount the winch on the trailer.

vajayjay
02-04-2014, 09:44 PM
Then just leave my winch and battery on my trailer while its parked on the side of sylvester or wherever it is while I'm out wheeling. I think not. I get nervous leaving it there with nothing on it

Reeseman
02-05-2014, 12:12 PM

Yeah yeah I noticed how much of an angle it was after it was too late, must have had the square tube off when I welded it in, so to square the tube the plate went crooked go fuck yourself
