Check your crank shaft pulley for cracks , a notorious problem with 90-96 chevy /gmc motors

goes away after 20 min?

that means it goes away when its warm?

Mis aligned water pump pully? or
water pump on its way out and can't take the additional back pressure when the thermostat is closed???

This is what i'd look at

Could be alt bearings or tensioner ??

Is there a trick to determine what component is making the noise.

Everything reverberates and i cant tell what one is asshole

if it stops after 20 min, what is the common factor?
temperature, what controls the temperature? water pump.

start there!

If it only lasts for 20 minutes its gonna take time to get it figured out anyways because u have a short window to find it before it disappears. Are they lined up properly could also be an issue

rocks or crap in the grooves of the pullys or inthe belt

talen
01-11-2014, 10:05 PM
take belts off 1 at a time to isolate the noise.

epic3
01-11-2014, 11:55 PM
You got a long screw driver and ear defenders? They make a great stethoscope to find the noise

New ac bypass pully:dontknow:

Couldn't just run a shorter belt like a normal chevy without A/C would do or is this something fancy

More likely to be armor all on belt than rocks and crap
It is tuna

Hellboy

It could be a moving part that has some sort of interference causing the noise..... Just sayin

02-10-2014, 01:19 PM
When it's noisy spray the belt with a bit of water, if noise goes away then it's a belt or alignment issue. If it's still noisy then I'd say a seal or bearing on one of the accessories. Stethoscope should narrow the noise down. F150's in the early '90s had this issue and it was the power steering pulley out of alignment. Taking a close look at the outer edges of the belt would show wear and which way the pulley needed to go.

You need the install kit for the shims and seals and bearings
And I have bearing pullers and a press here if needed

85chevy
02-12-2014, 07:07 PM
Also need a dial torque wrench for pinion preload and dial indicator for checking backlash and a vernicaliper for measure the shims
