View Full Version : Thanksgiving at the cabin

10-14-2013, 08:12 PM
For the long weekend my family got the okay to use my aunt and uncles cabin on the north west end of okanagan lake. MY brother is going to school at UBCO, so Patty (my girlfriend) and i picked up my brothers girlfriend on friday after work and met my brother at the cabin at around 11:30 friday night. Saturday morning we got the generator, water pump, hot water tank and propane system going. It had all been winterized as this is mainly a summer cabin. My parents met us up there at about noon on staurday. we put the 12 foot zodiak in the water so we could blast around the lake.

There is an old tug boat across the lake to the south about 2 km that we went to check out. It had been anchored there for about a year now and no body really knew why. When we got up close to it there were no trespassing signs all over it so we didnt board the ship, but i didnt notice a sign that said M.V. Okanagan. when we got back to the cabin i googled it on my phone and it turns out the boat was asn old CPR tug the pushed barges up and down the lake. it was 110 feet long, put in service in 1948 and was powered by an 800 horsepower washington diesel. It was retired in 1973 and in 1981 was moored at fintry and used as a floating restaurant. that business eventually went belly up and the boat was then moved to kelowna where it was moored until the curent owner bought it and moved it to where it is now. The only add i could find said that you could now rent it out as a party venue, a bed and breakfast, or basically anything you can dream of, though i have never personally seen anyone on it. I just found it interesting to know the history of the boat.

On sunday I took my truck down the road to sugar loaf mountain. My cousins told me there was a cell tower you could wheel to, but i didnt find it. I took a deactivated road that took us to the top of a mountain. it gradually got too overgrown to keep going so we headed back to the cabin. I got a pretty cool shot in an open area we found with some pretty tall grass in it. thats about all to report there.

I think you were looking for the Blue Grouse Mtn towers, as there aren't any up near Sugarloaf, off Bear Main to Km 3 then turn right, head up 10 clicks to the top, staying to the left at the fork.
