I am finally putting a different engine into the sidekick 2DR. Budget is $2000 for the engine and parts would like to spend less if I can.

What is the best choice for power and MPG? I was thinking the VW 1.9L TD, now I am hereing about a Toyota 3TC ?

Best weight to power would be your VW swap.

Every other diesel weighs too much....

Problem with the swift GT swap is all horsepower but no torque.

It`s a race engine not an off road engine (unless your into mud and want to spin the tires at high rpm)

1.6 swift is all high RPM horsepower no good for trail wheeling unless you have massive amounts of low range gearing and don't mind listening to your truck at 8000 rpm all day.

2.0 vitara engine is a throw away engine, they're junk for any longevity.

VW TDI swap is the way I would go a little pricier in the beginning but well worth the effort and money in the end with a torky powerful little diesel (with a little tuning lol) that is proven reliable and good MPG

toy 22re would be an alright swap for one. At least they are reliable, make reasonable power for the package and parts support is very good.

I have the money the VW TD it is, is there a problem with having 5.13 gears running to high RPM's ?

What's your tire size?

for what it is worth, all stock samurai gears with 31" tires is the closest your going to get to a stock '87 Jetta with the 1.6TD in it.

The jetta turns 3000 rpm at 110 kmh

The samurai would be so very slightly higher than that with the 31's but is a little doggy at highway speed as the 1.6TD doesn't have sufficient torque.

You are better off with a slightly higher RPM so it doesn't fall on it's face on the freeway. But then again that could just be my setup too....

I believe the injection pump is goverened to some 5600 rpm but could be wrong.

Have heard of some pump builders getting 6000rpm+ out of the 1.6TD

I run 32/11.5 tires with the 5.13gears out of a tracker.
