so, I seem to have a mystery leak in my tranny(87 w56 top shift). Seals are fine, bolts are tight. I even did a black light dye kit when I was in school, not a single trace of the dye showed up....and yet it still leaks. Oil collects on the bottom of the tranny from somewhere else. Possibly a hairline fracture in the case or angry trolls? Any ideas? [cheers]

Is it gear lube or motor oil ?
If you die tested it and no die showed up but oil did
Would make me think oil is from somewhere else

rear main seal?
or maybe half-moon seal at back of head?

[iagree] yup sounds like a rear main seal. mine went on my truck. and it leaked onto tranny area.

hey sorry my mistake, should have clarified it is gear lube not motor oil. I'll have to check the shifter plate...maybe it leaks from there?...but that should have still shown up in the dye test. Probably much less hassle and time to just find a new tranny

Could be from t case then tranny and t case are separate
So if you dyed the trans and got gear lube but no dye trace
It's probably t case poss front output seal
