View Full Version : Cabin Lake trip

So my wife and I and my buddy and his wife all headed into Cabin Lake near Merritt for the first time. After lots of reading of directions online and a few wrong turns we made it in to the lake and it was gorgeous! We were hoping for a little more challenging wheeling, but it was better than nothing. At least we needed 4wd. I'm very glad we tried this lake as the setting was awesome. We did some biking, some canoeing and hiked several km back into another valley to find an old water bomber crash from 1974. All in all a great trip and would recommend the area to anyone!
fyi, easiest access is off hwy8, but my buddy went out to the kingsvale exit from the lake and I read of guys going in off the #1 North of Hope.

cool, did you know of the bomber crash ahead of time? Or just find it out of the blue?

Wow that has really melted this year. Last year I was up there for Canada Day long lake was still frozen snow every where and the plane was so covered in snow we couldn't find it

I had read something about the plane crash but we didn't know how far it was.... so we basically hiked the trail until it went over the next ridge and saw it from up on the ridge and backtracked to it. :) really lucky to have found it and if it weren't for my wife we would have turned around and never found it, but she was determined! It's because last year we were within 300 yards of a mine at 7000ft near Trout Lake and never knew it was there so she said we weren't going to miss another site haha
And ya there was tons of snow last year and a cooler spring/early summer too. did you guys actually hike the 5k to the bowl in that much snow!?!?

No we quaded in the snow didn't really cause us a problem until we got to the hill that leads down to the lake then it got interesting lol

Beautiful lake and camping spot.
Did you catch any fish?
What animals did you see there besides the deer?
Looks like a nice quiet spot.

thanks all! and taxi, we took a canoe, but we never saw a single thing jump or rise or anything so I only fished for like 15minutes. The bottom of the lake was all rock everywhere too, so it's not even like that could feed without rising. The water was so clear you could see bottom almost everywhere. as for other animals, we didn't see ANYTHING but deer which was a little disappointing, but there was tons of bear sign.
