Ok, so I was out driving around today.. and its starting to act weird..

Sometimes when I give it gas from a standing start.. it.. skips a little. Like it's changing gears but at the wrong times. And it lags.

Same for slowing down. It's almost as if the idle is on when I slow down cuz it has issues gearing down when it should.

I just had all the fluids checked, all good.

It's a 1985 4.1L.

It was driving fine not long ago.. not sure what caused it to start freaking out. Any ideas?

To me it seems like the idle.. but I know nothing of these motors. So far google has turned up nothing.. prolyl cuz I'm not exactly sure what I'm lookin for yet.

so it looks like you should have just put the money into your truck after all. :D

Check out the catalytic converter and o2 sensors.

Haha.. Maybe. even if I drop another 500 into the caddy.. I'm sitll better off than fixing the burban. damn inspection..

Google time

Ok so after more googling I found out to run the on board diagnostics. Comes up error code 39. Says its transmission related. It stands tor torque converter clutch engagement... sounds.. yucky.

And form what I've been googlling, its mostly peopel just letting it go until the tranny dies.

It still shifts ok... just when comign to a stop/accelerating from low speed it goes weird.

Also some people say you can get a chip that can fix it.. but it's hard to find reliable sources

what transmission is in it?

From that what u said the code is sounds like its either time to replace it or rebuild it

Yea... from what I've rea donline others who have had the problem either just drive until it dies or get a computer chip to changet he way the computer controls it

It might be. So far everything I've read.. people have their check engine soon light come on. I haven't had that. It just acts weird. Could it be due to heating up too much or something?

I haven't driven it since.. but I will soon. I'm gonna reset the diagnostic codes, and go for a drive... see what happens.

It still shifted smoothly.. just not in the correct rpms

Sooooo.. I went for a cruise and it was if nothing had happened. Drove like a cloud. Shifted properly.. The auto-dimming high beams work, the auto lights work... the turning lights(not signal, but rather diagnal headlights when you use a signal light) work...

I don't know why it was acting up. Other than maybe over heating as it was fairly hot out earlier..

Yea Iw as worried for a bit. But driving it again yesterday no problems. Thoguh after going to chiliwack and back to abby, it almost seemed as if it was gonna start acting up again. It's gotta be heat related

it could be the pump in the trany at an idle it might be not pumping enough oil

which means its gonna fail

Hmm. Drove around quite a bit today, not long enough or up major hill to get it hot though. No issues.

Anyway to test the pump? Or fix?

There might be depends on what test ports they have on the transmission. You can stall test it too but only way to fix it is to remove transmission its what ur torque converter plugs into.

Hmm. Okay.

So how do I find out what ports are there?

As for the stall test.. IIRC its when you block the car from moving and WOT until it stalls and get the max RPM reading? I would need an RPM gauge..

Could that hurt the trans tho, esp cuz it's been acting up recently. I wouldn't wanna push it over the edge doin a test.

If the fluid and filter haven't been changed recently the it might just simply have a plugged filter and can't get enough fluid

I've done a lot of driving... Langely and back to abby three times, out to chiliwack... but it hasn't done it again. Hasn't even remotely begun to act up.

Maybe it was just upset because it's been driven more than it's used to.

hopefully its all good[cheers]

Don't say that! :(

My dad just bougth a 97 deville to replace his 99 deville. the 97 has less miles and in better condition. But when he first got it, the engine ran a little rough, the interior lights didn't come on when you opened a door(they would manually) and the trunk release wouldn't work on the remote or the dash button.. had to use the key.

Since then he drove it up country and now it purrs like a kitten, lights work, and trunk works as should.

Just had an attitude problem...

Hopefully thats all mine had and is better now. :D

if you like the car and want to keep it put a fuel injected sbc and 700r4 in her .

now with that trans it could be a bad ground on the comp or on trans or a connecter with bad contacts or corrosion .. in my ram 3500 diesel with the od the valves where sticky and i put a bottle of mopar posi additive in it and its worked great since
