Got some more done on the ranger this weekend , got the old coil buckets cut out and found some early bronco coil buckets that should work perfect when I was digging threw my parts shed , also took out the mangled radius arm x-member you can see from the pic's how bent it is

Had to do a bit of frame mods on the driver side , the frame had a wierd hump in it due to the power steering box , me and nick cut it out and flattened it out welded er all up good nd solid

So after aparently wasteing time rebuilding this thing I have torn it apart once again , getting rid of my wildhorse extended arms and going with Dom and Johnny's closer to stock length to improve my shitty caster angel and pinion angel so here we go again for the whateverith time it is

On the one I just did think the joints are limiting
The flex they bind in the mounts so a spacer on either side of the joint
To make the mounts wider would help I think

Did you make a whole new crossmember ? And where your mounts straight or on an angle , my arms taper in so I was going to weld my tabs for my Johnny on the same angel so the joint sits square then I should get max travel side to side once Its moving

12-06-2012, 04:54 PM
Yes mounts were square to radius arm
They taper in as well
Up down is good its twist in the joint look at rebags mounts
See how much space between joint housing and mount
There almost identical to the ones I made
They were copied off the link mounts in my willys
But they have two joints
instead of a bushing on one end and a joint on other end
I wanted to change it but didn't have time to remake the mounts wider
To allow more twist
Just something I would change if I did it again
Truck dosnt flex as good as it did with the radius arm bushings
And the only real change in suspension was the joints
Same length and angle on arms
But at least it won't eat bushings out of it

skyjacker
12-06-2012, 08:13 PM
What where you going to for spacers ?

4skin
12-06-2012, 08:24 PM
was thinking a piece of 1\4 inch platecut to size or some thick washers
welded inside the the brackets

12-07-2012, 09:13 AM
Nope just a straight arm jer
Stock wheels exploder will flex past the shock travel
Without hillbilly flex arms
Just of replacing the radius arm bushing with a johny joint

It doesnt flex any worse than b4 just doesnt flex any better either lol. I think its my springs holding me back in the flex department. Shouldn't hav talked me out of the coilovers. Now im gnna hav to bring it back again for that upgrade. But not anytime soon bcuz that home owner thing sucks the bank dry b4 i fill it :( lol

What kind of coils are you running? I have wildhorse EB 5.5 coils , my truck flexed pritty good before hopeing it will be better with the johnnys , but I think I'll try some spacers like Bruce is talking about

4skin
12-11-2012, 04:32 PM
Not shure think its a skyjAcker coil
And it was before we had springs in it that I noticed the bind
And the link mounts are right at tranny cross member

i think he has the ttb coil still 4xxppi

skyjacker
12-11-2012, 05:16 PM
Yea the ranger ttb coils are a verry stiff coil , the EB ones are alot better and my bro is useing xj coils which flex even better , I'd switch over to some EB's or xjs and you will probably gain alot

I use the tttb super lift coils and have no issues but i have an explorer not a ranger lots of extra weight

94Ranger
12-11-2012, 05:50 PM
Yea im running the skyjacker coils im hoping it will work a lil better with bumper/winch weight on the front. When i upgrade going to go with my original build plan and get some 12"-14" coilovers but lack of money and bruce talked me out of going that route this time around.

if your going to run ttb coils use the ones stockwheels is running the superlift ones. they seem to work way better than my skyjacker ones. be best do do what skyjacker or rebag are doin tho and run either EB coils or xj coils.

I would look at your max twist in the joint and space it
So the joint just contacts the bracket

My brother (skyjacker) is running wild horse 5.5" and im running 5.5" re xj coils, the wild horses are about 20" free length and compress to roughly 17" under his ranger, the re's are 22" free length and compress to about 18" under my ranger they gave me right around 7" of lift. If your looking for 5" of lift i would run 3.5" eb's or 3.5" re's. I had to modify my upper coil buckets to use the xj coils.

I'm debating on making it a 3 piece crossmember so the centure section can be removed to pull the tranny , it should make it easier than dropping the whole works , just need to figure out a good solid design that works good , I was just going to use flat pieces of plate welded to the ends of the tube and bolt it but it sounds ugly and then I'll have a nice place to hook my crossmember on rocks etc.

Hope to get them welded on next week , then I need to find a 6' metal brake to brake the sheet metal for the inside of the box and figure out how I'm going to mount it to the frame

Got the tube fenders welded on also had to move the 2 cross rails on the bottom of the box so they will line up with the mounting hole ( I forgot about it completely so I had to cut and redo) , also getting the aluminum checker plate ready for the tops of the fenders

Ya but now that it's in my yard I gotta do something about it , probably use the box and frame for a custom camping trailer :D
