View Full Version : My Easter Weekend

Was midisland visiting the girl's family, and thought it would be a shame to take my truck without leaving pavement somewhere.

I went out looking for a connection from island highway to arrowsmith mountain, since all the gates at the bottom were locked. There's a gate with a guard shack just south of parksville, and it looked like Englishman River Main would take me there. The mapbook was ambiguous in the area after the first large bridge, so I started by following a well-cut road up a hill.

That ended in a helicopter landing area, so I shot some photos of the Ranger.

A creek above it, strange in how close it was to a dropoff without spilling over.

Backtracked from there, and found a more worn out road in the same general direction, closer looking at the mapbook shows that this would be the right one. After about 2km there was a bridge.

A view from the far side.

But on a closer look, I decided it wasn't worth trying, being so much heavier than the quads whose tracks I had been following.

As I said, the road was worn down, and I took some flex poser shots in a ditchy part on the way back.

(This one's my desktop image now)

A shot of the road back from that ditch.

Followed the Main upstream of the larger bridge that led to the two first turnarounds, and followed a trail down to the river. There was quad tracks into the river here, and it was very shallow. I'm certain there's a way to ford upstream of the rotten bridge, but I'd like to come back with two trucks and a pair of waders before I dive in. I was starting to run out of time (gate is locked at 5:00), so I turned back and drove up to the main. Took HD video of that bit.

Found an interesting waterfall heading back to the paved road, my license plate says "Beautiful British Columbia" for a reason.

Truck most of the way back, stopped because the trees changed.

And a bad photo of an old Pacific off-highway logging truck.

No really exciting 'wheeling, but I got to get out and have fun, and that's what this site's about. I'd love to go back sometime with more time, we didn't get onto the road until noon and they lock the gate at five.
