tryin to fix one of the landlords orchard trucks and I've become stumped.

its a 1989 f250 with the 460fi engine and aod trans. It idles great and anything below 2000rpm it runs fine. I can rev it up to about 3500rpm briefly before it falls on its face. What its doing... if I put my foot to the floor it sounds as if the engine wants to rev but cant, like... as if the engine is on a dyno putting massive stress on it. Its really straining, but just wont go. The air pump was making harsh backpressure sounds so i unhooked it,

Is it possible rodents made a nest in the exhaust? the exhaust before and after the catalytic are approx the same temp. anyways it sounds as if its a restriction problem, intake is clean... so im thinking exhaust. any other ideas??

I ended up cutting a 2inch hole infront of the catalytic and it runs great, I insisted on removing the cat and strait piping it but landlord just wanted me to leave it alone. Easy $200 off rent for me :)
