View Full Version : are electric fans the only way to keep the 4.0L cool?

just blew a head gasket in my jeep due to overheating (climbing a slippery hill, not paying attention to gauge), i have had nothing but issues trying to keep this engine and it's last engine cool under heavy load (hill climbing, etc...), it has brand new triple row rad, good circulation. it's fine on the level but as soon as it starts a good pull up a hill it overheats.....WTF? is this a common issue?:dontknow:

I added the zj hd fan clutch, a big tranny cooler ,csf all metal 3 row, a 15 ich electric fan and hood vents and it still warms up on big hills. I have 4:10 and 33's so its working good on steep hills

previous to that I rigged up a water bar with jets to spray the rad on steep hills, I liked it so much I still have it on there. a good 30 second soak and you could watch the gauge go down.

Electric fans pull way more air, I put 1 12" one in my samurai after my head got fucked from a faulty fan clutch and it doesn't even compare.

If you have a after market water temp gauge you have alot more control on the temp (factory gauges usually read alot slower than the actual change in temp)

sounds like engine's too big for the tiny little rad they stuffed in from factory, hhmmm, sounds like some custom mods in the future!!

I have a 92 XJ . Has stock clutch fan and stock electric fan. Temp never goes above 100, thats with 33"s and 3.07s.

what year is your heep? if its the closed system then they are prown to air pockets that screw everything up . put in a 92 and up open rad system ( super easy and cheap to do) end of problem.

Jeeps are never cool. :D

yes they are all the cool kids have have one.....you could buy a Toyota but all your friends will laugh at you :)

Build yourself a stroker, my truck runs cooler now than ever :D

I was running a 160 thermostat and it was almost to cool so I just changed to a 180 and runs around the quarter mark. I am running two electric fans though.and a stock rad

it all depends on different variables about the truck itself,

so you got a 3 core rad, ok,

1.do you have the shroud over the clutch fan?
2.does the clutch fan operate properly, if not then you need to replace it
3.a weak waterpump will not help
4.what size tires are you running with what gears?
5.a mud covered engine will run hotter than a clean engine
6.hood vents are always a good investment with a jeep
7.what type of cooling system are you running? open or closed? (do you have a rad cap or not)
8.is there anything blocking the airflow to the rad?(winch? shitload of lights?)

im running my clutch fan still but i replaced the clutch in the fan and made sure that the shroud was on it properly and also added a stock xj a/c fan next to it for when it gets hot, it does the trick well, alot of the engine heat that i get is cause im running 3:55 gears and 36" tires with a automatic, but if the temp ever gets past half i turn the heat on for a bit, which is rare, where as in jjs case hes got a new bored out ported motor and 4.88 gears with 35`s so his motor has less trouble trying to turn the tires with thoes gears as i would, which can kill a engine over time,

weird ???

my 4.0 stays the same temp with in a few degrees no matter what i do and my rad is a cheap plastic pos

on my old jeep it had a closed cooling system and it ran ok, but after i pulled the head, intake and exhaust manifold and cleaned them all with new gaskets it started running cooler, 4.0L block cooling jets and ports were gunked up and full of shit, after i cleaned them up it ran way better and cooled way better,

did that make sence? cause it didnt in my head......[stoned]

here's a thought tranny cooler is integrated into the rad....tranys (autos) get quite hot when they are under load...lotsa liquid friction in the TC..then all that heat energy gets transferred to the coolant in the rad....i think i'm gonna run an air cooled trans cooler.....maybe find a way to run engine oil through the stock trany cooler + throw the 195F thermostat in the bush and replace with a 180F + install electric fans + fab up a proper reservoir with a rad cap.....

Your ideas sound great to keep it cool. I use a vacuum filler to fill the coolant up, and also bleed leftover air out of the sensor at the rear of the head on the drivers side. I drive around a whole summer running hot until someone said to try bleeding it from the temp sensor hole. If you have the old system with no rad cap and the stupid expansion tank on the firewall, throw it away or burn it and install a inline filler neck in your upper rad hose like
: http://www.moroso.com/catalog/categorydisplay.asp?catcode=29014 . I think The moroso one from lordco was 40 bucks.

the fucking system works just fine. I have worked on this system many times, the system was installed stock for a reason, because it works! the ONLY problem people have with it is airlocks, and sinse no one can figure it out for whatever reason, everyone has labelled this system garbage. It is very simple.
there is no rad cap - oh wait you just fill from the resevoir instead, how hard was that?
my system is overheating all the time - crack one line at a time bleed the air out and fill with fluid, how hard was that?
my thermostat isnt working - remove it and install an inline ball valve then you have complete manual control, if your doing a big hill climb let her flow wide open, total of 1/2 an hours work
my jeep is still overheating after i did all these - a resevoired cooling system is not the problem! its something in your cooling system that will fail with any other system.

like i said i have dealt with this problem time and time again, never have I had a complaint after fixing it!

Yeah was a great system, I love relying on a plastic bottle under
high heat and high pressure, its a recipe for success!

sooo turns out that there were two other pistons melted down.....swapped them out of old engine and cleaned them up..new rings, new bearings, honed the shit outta the cylinder...ring gap is at max but whatever....what 4x4 doesn't blow a little blue here and there :o , old head is at Fortin's being machined and pressure tested....head off the new engine had molten aluminium all over the seats and into the valve guides.....not worth repairing. now I wait....

get a real! header! and get it jetcoated! , use the 2000+ intake
keep your coolant clean/flushed , and your tranny fluid (if your an auto)
clean a fresh...works for me 98xj

If its auto the temp will climb when in low range due to low air flow. The tranny lines and trans oil pan are very close to the cat. Tranny temp can exceed 200 degrees. The cat will exceed temps alot higher than this. Install trans cooler. Worked for me.

Sour Dalton
02-26-2012, 08:33 PM
yeah thats why i am going to put in an air cooled trans cooler and use trans cooler in the rad as an engine oil cooler so the coolant and engine oil can regulate each other....plus dual electric fans....should do the trick....

Lazybaka
02-27-2012, 08:21 PM
course..after this I blow a rad..I guess 400,000 is just to much to ask..lol
