so started figureing out front bumper for the willys
as much as i love my old 8274 warn
its just too big to mount on the front
so its going in the back:D :D
thinking of something smaller with winch rope instead of cable
truck should be under 2600 lbs i hope
what would you sujest in a 8000 winch:dontknow:

yea and you can winch all day
good thing because the line speed is slow

For electric 8274 is a great electric winch but check out the line speed comparison .

8000lbs should be fine Bruce you only need a winch that equals 1 and a half times the weight of your vehicle. So you could go down to as little as 3900lbs if you wanted to.

8274....everything else is a compromise
I remember a time long ago when a 8274 got one or two trucks up the hill at davis,,,,,,the hydrolic pulled the other ten trucks up non stop one after the other[36] An electric winch is ok for emergencys, when they work.

Electrics work well if u keep them clean and greased, otherwise you end up like Jj, stuck and your winch is fucked! I got the same winch bruce, works awesome!

well when your truck aint running the hydro isnt pulling nothing
say laying on its side i fliped my runner back on its wheels with my 8274
dont think the engine would live long enough to ru a hydro
when we did the dodge recovery at east stave dary has a mile marker on his rover
we had to stop with the electric winches so his linne would catch up

I always have back up systems. The winch on my blazer would have pulled the dodge out on its own. The when your truck isn't running argument doesn't woek for me,,,,,,cause if your truck isn't running the few feet a winch will get you does you no good when your battery is dead. Now you cant start your truck even if you fix the not running problem. Then there is the two battery argument. most people have a hard time maintaining one battery, and don't have two batteries. Just saying,,,,,if you want a good winch in a small package, hydraulic is the way to go. Thay are not fast, and don't work when the engines not running, but that is about the only downfall I have seen with mine. The new Pumpkin will also have an electric for the back, with its own battery.

what about electric motor for a hydro as backup?

barracuda
10-28-2011, 02:55 PM
the whole if your truck aint running thing makes me chuckle cause if you truck isnt running you now have two dead batteries and a dead truck lol

jackall is a good back up as you can lift and winch with one

well i fliped the runner back on its wheels and it still started
yea you cant winch for long but it could be enough to secure
or move it so you can fix it
and i also carry a jack all
and i only run optimas ive wheeled all day after killing the altenator
and ccost is a factor to run a hydro id need to upgrade my pspump
the yota one is marginal just for steering

thats the biggest drawback on pto/hydro winches.
the initial cost and mods you have to do .

i have a low profile PTO that i was always meaning to install but never got round to it as the 8274 still works well so im saveing it for the next project.

ive often wondered about makeing a hydraulic drive for a warn upright.

Bottom line.......six of one half a dozen of the other. Just install whatever you choose right use it properly and know its limitations

buy a m8000 and get it over with.

anyone who suggests a hydraulic winch clearly has never had to winch your dead or busted up stuff onto a trailer.

Had an M8000, upgraded to a 9500i. Winch doesn't mean a thing if you are not running...... however combined with my yellow top optima, 35 mins of winching till i could get running, and then another hour after the yellow top fired the renegade up..... I'd go for the Battery to run that winch.

BTW AFAIC snatch blocks are not what your wife does when you get home from the Alder Inn stinking of booze after watching the strippers. Snatch blocks double your pull.. ie M8000 can pull twice it's load capacity from the spec sheet of wraps. Downfall is it always doubles your line load capacity out affecting your true lb pull.

We have a Champion.
$401.73 for a 9.5 ton winch was pretty good!
Paid for itself the first real 4X4 trip!

Sure, it ain't a Warn. But if it works, what the fuck!

I bought my warn for 400bucks. Works great for pulling everyone else out but haven't used mine for my truck yet. The only thing that sucks is I can't keep the water out and I find my self cleaning it all the time
