Very nice little deer for sure. I like watching animals forage calmly, then they smell you and are on the alert then they bolt into the bush. Its' this little deers' grampa I would like to have an encounter with.

It is called a mule deer because it has ears that are long and tall like a mule. They have black-tipped tails unlike a white-tailed deer. Their horns fork off almost right from the skull after being shed, every year unlike a white-tailed deer whos' horns fork off of a main branch first. Mule deer bucks can weigh anywhere from about 150 pounds to 300 pounds on a healthy older buck and some bucks have been harvested that weigh 500 pounds! Those are known as the northern bucks where they grow older becasue of less predation by humans.

type of deer :) just like how there is white tail deer best way to identify a mule deer from a white tail is well of course their tails.... when a white tail runs away their tail flips up and its all white. Also the mule deer has bigger ears like geezer mentioned above.

When we were hunting up in the Red Lake area a couple weeks ago we saw over 30 does but only 2 fawns. We figured the fawns had either been killed by predators or they were just laying down in the meadow grass waiting for mom to come back from foraging. We saw 6 bucks, all smaller guys but one hunter bagged a nice 4x4 buck. One buck I saw in my spotting scope had one eye totally grown over with some sort of growth or warts or something, and I couldn't get a shot off because there were quads in the area, we could hear the quads from afar and didn't want to chance a shooting accident.

I know around here your more likely to see a mule deer rather then a white tail. Still havnt found a white tail to photograph since we moved here just over a year ago, but they are around.
