Came across a deal i could not pass up.
I know i do not need another project yet, but for $600 bucks i can make room for it.
Had not run in 10 years but after some checks and some fresh gas it fired right up.
Body is rough, OK, very rough, but the frame is solid.
It already has a spring over and a Chevy steering box conversion.
Just going to put it on the road for now while we collect body parts.http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx183/93FZJ80/DSC04641.jpg

Came across a Holley 2BRL ProJection setup with a NOS Holley closed loop kit for a few hundred bucks.
Will be putting it on the 40 and ditching the carb.

Used this setup years ago on a SBC and it worked pretty good, i expect the closed look kit with a O2 sensor should make it better.

Found a nice set of blemished fenders at a bargain price.http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx183/93FZJ80/DSC04757.jpg
The ones on the truck are not worth the time to fix.
Front diff knuckle and Tcase rebuild kits should keep me busy for a while.
Going to upgrade the brakes as well.http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx183/93FZJ80/DSC04750.jpg
Locker, gear-set, long spline kit and hydro assist ram is for the BJ60.

FZJ80

Started out wanting to yanked out the Tcase today, ended up pulling the trans as well, much easier to split them on the bench.
Was really only planning on rebuilding the Tcase but now will go through both.
Have a half dozen spare thirds hanging about so went through a pair to replace the ones that came in the diffs, painted up today.
Open for now, Aussies or Detroit's later.
Painted the underside of the new fenders with Chassis Saver paint as well.

Pulled the front diff apart to rebuild the knuckles and swap the third for the rebuilt unit.
Got the third out and found 3.70s not 4.11s that were in the rebuilt one.
Dug through some boxes and found one of the gear-sets taken out of my BJ60.
Set them up in the third pulled from the front so it can go back in later, first i have to fix a dent in the housing that is contacting the ring gear.http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx183/93FZJ80/DSC04804.jpg

Worked out well , i would have swapped the gears anyways but i thought they were 4.11s to start with.

FZJ80
01-05-2012, 04:06 PM

Got the pan painted & back on.
http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx183/93FZJ80/DSC04832.jpg
Ground off the patch a PO welded on, (tried to weld on) leaving a hole were the ring gear ate it's way through.
http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx183/93FZJ80/DSC04844.jpg
Pounded out the dent and cleaned it up to weld on some armor later.
Installed the third, the axles, cut down backing plates, new rotors and a pair of larger 4Runner calipers.
http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx183/93FZJ80/DSC04845.jpg
http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx183/93FZJ80/DSC04848.jpg
I broke one of the Warn hubs getting them off, but i wasn't going to use them anyways.
The axle & hubs on this Cruiser are a longer variety so i will have to source a set of longer hubs.
In the mean time i found that the drive flanges off a 80 series Cruiser fit just fine.

Haven't done anything on either project my son is up country so my muscle is gone.
I hate this weather, i don't do well in the cold anymore so i use the time sourcing parts.
Found a set of Asin locking hubs that fit the longer axle stubs, i just have to pick them up.
Ordered new rod ends and link ends, they should be here soon and that should take care of the steering.
I will get back to it when the weather warms up, i promise.

Son and i pulled off the front fenders, bib, steps, flares, and other parts to do a little body work.
Panel guarded the undersides of the new fenders and hood.
The bib will need some work before it gets the same.
The tub however needs more extensive work, it may just get a cover up till i decide if it gets a new tub or not.

Tranny and Tcase are back in, the rear diff has been given some 4:11 gears, axle bearings, seals and a Spartan locker.

Blasted and painted some parts while the front fenders were off.

Felt it could use some more diagonal support and i needed a bar to mount harnesses to.
Added a X brace to the main hoop and one across the top of the dash.http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx183/93FZJ80/DSC05074.jpg

Yep right smack in the middle of the truck, pretty bad on the drivers side.
About $350.oo to replace just the tube structure and almost that again for a stamped middle floor section.
If you add up the cost of all the parts needed a new 1/2 tub is a bargain, more so if you add it your time to do all the work.
Screw it, i am just going to bodge it back into shape for now.

this is how i fixed it took roughly 3hrs to make
just plasma cut out of 16 gage and welded it up
made it 8 inches narower than truck to get it in
then built the outer pieces to the rockers to fit over it
plug welded it together looks close to original
originaly started to try patching it
but was just chasing it
hope this gives you a idea how bud[cheers]

My box pan break only does 48", so i will probably bend something out at work.
Most likely two main pieces spot welded together.
The drivers side rocker is not installed yet and the quarters are yet to be done so sliding it in should pose no real issue.
The main floor metal seems good enough to weld to but i have yet to check it out fully.
Like i said i just want it to hold together safely till it gets a new tub.
Thanks for the tip though.

yea its pretty open once you have it cut out
wish i had cut the rockers out to have done it on mine
shure would have been easier
and i wouldnt have had as big a bondo fire lol

Ya this bitch is full of Bondo too, would make for a long burn. quarters are full, rocker as well.
Not putting any Bondo back in, if the panels are wavy so be it but i don't want rust holes!

Found an Offenhauser 4 barrel manifold.
Was a dual port made for a square bore carb so i had to milled it out to better fit the 2bl Holley injection.

Got to work on the drivers rocker panel and main crossmember.
The crossmember on the drivers side was no longer joined to the floor so the seat and occupant were in danger of falling through.
Was very rusty where the front of the wheel tub and lower quarter all meet, holes mostly filled in with Bondo!
A little more welding underneath and she will be safe to go back on the road.

A few more progress pics.
I cut most of the rust out but other than some panel guard to hide the welded areas that is all the body work it is getting.
With the help from a few friends the cage went back in and i added a quickie front bumper.
