I have a bit of a question, I have this old 4into1 header and I'm debating if I should swap in it.

I currently have the old style 22r manifold with the single outlet. I'm debating if I'm better off with the header or a newer style 22re manifold with dual outlets. I'm told the old style manifold is a crap design. I had a truck with a 22re that had the better dual outlet manifold, it looked like it flowed well.

I have read that these engines respond well to tri-y style headers (thorley) and 4into1s arn't the best.

Oh, I also have the rest of the exhaust system to go with the header.
2" pipe.

after re welding my down pipe to manifold connection 15 times over the last 10 years i just put on a head man header. kinda a shorty i guess. about a $150 from lordco seems like a good deal. no notiable perf gains.

I messed around with at least 7 different headers on Toyota engines from 18 rc to 22 ret and now with v6 stuff and I have found that doug thorleys are the best.

Not cheap.

I am getting a set for my 3.4 l and I them on my 1970 celica and on my 82'.

Most cheap headers are worse than stock at the flange and are thin pipes.

IMO keep the stock manifold until you get some good ones.

Hope this helps.

I have a headman header on my 22re in my buggy, no problems with it at all.

I cross posted this on pirate, seems long tube headers help low-end power. Which is exactly where I need it. Maybe this is why the short header from Lordco doesn't help much?

I think I'm going to try using it, if I have trouble getting it to seal or fit, I'll go back to stock or get a different header/stock manifold.

I wasn't really planning on using it when I got it, but I'm getting tired of smelling exhaust when I open the rear window.

Guess I have a project for today.:dontknow:

Well, on closer inspection of the collector 'flange' I found this.

It's suposed to mate with this:

Is there suposed to be a gasket or something inbetween? Cause I can't see how it would ever seal, broken or not. I'm thinking of cutting it off and welding a flex joint one one end and use a clamp on the other. Anyone had any luck with those flex joints from canadian tire?

I run a flex joint on my car to stop the exhaust from pulling on my turbo. Seems to work well, i would run one

That doesn't look like a air tight connection at all, doesn't seem like a gasket is supposed to go in there. It looks like some of the lip has rusted out and bow doesn't seal properly. Put that flex connector in and see if that helps. I used to have a hedman header on my 22re and that increased my acceleration a lot. It was worth putting it on for sure, especially if you have a muffler with good back pressure.

I picked up a set of new flanges from lordco today, I'll throw up some pics up tomorrow after work as my welder isn't at home, it's at work. My remflex gasket doesn't come in till tuesday as well. FYI Lordo's got them on sale at the moment, 17 bucks. I've got to sand the header flange at work as well. We've got a big-ass belt sander.[36]

The flange kit looks a bit like this:

Maybe I'll do a write up on how to polish a turd.:confused0006:

Seems like a lot of work for something that is quite rusty.

Well, it turns out, the header hits my crossmember.[16]

I probobly could get it to fit, bend it ect. But I've decided its not worth the hassle.

If anyone wants it, let me know. Otherwise I'm throwing it away.
