they look like dodge dana 60 axels. there should be a build number on the axel tube probably gonna need a wire brush to find them. that will be a sweet ride when done looking forward to seeing build pics.

front looks like a dodge 3/4ton d44

the easy way to tell if d44 or d60 is the shape of the steering arm end cap square its a d60 curved and its a d44 my eyes aren't good enuf to see the shape in the pics.

Troy
08-02-2011, 12:17 AM
i dont see any kingpins on that front end, definatly dodge though. looks like the arm is curved. so its probably a 3/4 ton.

08-02-2011, 12:19 AM
that looks like a d60 and the rear might be a d70. looks like a dully rear

Apathy
08-02-2011, 10:30 AM
i'm pretty possitive the front is a D44, flat tops and ball joints.

rear has me puzzled.

Love the look of the old datsuns, looking forward to the build [cheers]

A couple times I've thought of trying to put lights like that onto my R50...the hood design is similar and I figure you could make the grill look pretty similar

why did he quote me for the how to ID hint ??? I know what a d44 and a d60 look like

d44 front, only reason i said dodge was I hadnt seen chevy full time outers like that, if you have a pic that shows the shock mounts on the front d44 everyone should be able to tell if its chevy or dodge

Your absolutely correct, snow wheeling and big horse power just go together.

Defiantly stay away from a V6. Most guys are running 500 plus cubes and 500 plus HP

ya, i hear ya. but you can get alot of ponies out of a 4.6 vortec.
and it would be easier to shoe horn it into the engine compartment.

but i' still leaning toward SBC.

besides, you have any idea how much these things weigh? NOTHING.

the idea is to get a cheap doner chev for drive train.
I can upgrade to another engine later.

basically i'm looking for at least a tbi 350.

or maybe a 4.6 vortec. tranny and t-case.

i got it home, and next step is strippping it, and finding the drive train.

Pickin up a toyota 4runner from another member on here. The tube buggy is going to be my rock crawler/summer trail rig. The snow wheeler is a 1993 4runner 4link'd front and rear on 18" coil overs on 1ton diffs

I can't wait for the snow to stary flying

Holy thats going to be a fun 4runner man. 4 linked all around too, that's goin to be nice and flexy for those sudden ditches you find out in the snow! That sounds like it's going to be a solid rig. I can't wait to go snow wheeling already!

Apathy
10-14-2011, 07:44 AM
OK,
Here are a couple of things i'm tossing around. let me know what you think.

1) using leaf springs instead of links and coils. links and coils are definately "cool" and flex better. However this is going to be a "snow and mud" rig.. not a crawler or trail rig like my nissan.
Problem is, i can build a leaf suspension fairly cheap. just the steel for links is going to cost me 500 bucks, and that does not include suspension joints, air shocks or other springs.

2) I want a serious answer on this one. 42x14 Irocs or 44x19.5 Boggers.
Now don't just say boggers cause you think they are cool..

what do you guys thing?

levigardiner
10-14-2011, 09:04 AM
well depending on what kind of power plant your going to run, i think you should run the irocs, in the snow anyway

Apathy
10-14-2011, 09:23 AM
Plan is to run a FI small block chev.

i'm looking for a donor rig now.

youngun
10-14-2011, 10:36 AM
if your going to have 300+hp or 4.56+ gearing I would run the 44 boggers

If your going to be a little under powered or have 4.10 or worse gearing I would run the iroks

B
10-14-2011, 10:43 AM
those iroc's are way to small for the deep stuff 46 claw's or 44 bogger's

MUD CHILD
10-14-2011, 12:20 PM
You want a wide tire for the snow so you have a large "footprint" when aired down, the irocks are to small you need 44's or 46's. There is a large group of us here that wheel in the snow and those are the only tires you will find on our trucks, not because they look cool but because they work. If you have a choice get the claws[cheers]

Apathy
10-14-2011, 12:45 PM
Claws are actually cheaper than the boggers.
But I have only found them in a 16" wheel.
Which actually might be better for brake options.

What's your take on the suspension?

Apathy

link the rear at least or plan a ladder bar

Apathy
10-14-2011, 01:06 PM
Ya, on the trac bar.
But I have steel lad heims for a track bar already. I really want to do a kink suspension. Maybe I'll suck it up and just do it.

and i found rust, passengers side floorboard is pretty bad, looks like water sat in there for some time.
Going to have to replace half of it.. but thats it for rust on the rig.

only spot at all.

They don't rust when they are from California and then live in Oregon.

frame is mint and will be used in stock form.
One thing most don't know about these frames is they are "3" channel.
