I got a 2001 dakota 4.7 auto 4x4 quad cab and its not charging. The alt was rebrushed and tested good the connection between the alt and battery is good and the field exciter wire has ignition.

On that field wire , is it not grounded threw the ecu . Not to often does a ecu power up stuff they more often ground out the circuit :dontknow:

theres what I think are two field wires one is the 12v but the other does apear to be a ground controlled by the ecu. when I ground that wire the alt charges but goes sky high

How high? .. Sounds like you need a ecu reflash or a new ecu . Check if there is any tsb's on the charging system
That ecu should have the voltage reg in it and I have seen them fail ... Look on line there is a way to put a external regulater on it , but will cause a engine light, It will you by until you get a ecu

Yeah the prob was the ecu regulator output. Easy fix mod the alt with an internal single wire regulator. Its all good now and no check engine light
