I weld preped, preheated and tig welded the block to the highsteer arm, for more sheer strength. The socket head cap screw is upside down in the pic, it threads from the inside. In the past i have sheered all four off the knuckle. The steer pins have also sheered off before, its never good! I rock it old skool el manuel with cave lathes![36]

Make sure you weld the gussets from the axle tube to the knuckle balls or the axle housing will bend right there, Wanna make me a set of upgraded pins too?

Like the Marlin 25mm units? Probably pretty well.
Good work, nice to see you making them yourself.

Ditched the old bearings, and made some aluminum bronze bushings, since the bearings dont fit on the pins. the bushings dont have grease holes yet in the pic, but there is three 1/8 holes connecting the two grooves. (id and od) and are now greased through the 4140 pin.top and bottom.[36] 141571

Just a tip or FYI, before you go any further, grab a shaft and your 3rd and install them. This is just to make sure your shaft still fits. When you weld that gusset on that you have, if you do so in one sweep, it pulls and shrinks bending your housing and the long side shaft doesn't fit anymore. They should be welded in 1" stitches at a time when cooled. As already noted, the housings always bend at the knuckle, that would be an important area to gusset, both top and bottom.

I just got the 4340 berfs, there cheep , i havent broken verry many stock berfs , even tho im running 44s , and i diddnt break the ones w the rings welded on the back side. I think u have to do inners and hubs when u do the stronger ones, and they are like 500 bucks. If im going to spend that, it should be towards a 60.:dontknow: [cheers]

youngun
04-21-2011, 06:58 PM
yeah, the 4340 ones are pretty good, i had them in a toyota i had with 40" tsls, beadlocked with a welded front and I caught air and came down on the gas a few times and never broke. And thats on dirt. Should hold up good for snow wheelin!!

Dude what's with those weird studs going up out of the knuckles, are you tieing them together or some thing? This thread is shit without more pics..:party0010:

Bent Black
04-23-2011, 10:43 PM
yup i call it the Toyota turnbuckle! its a piece of 1045 drilled and tapped, with left and right hand heim joints on each end. when i made the 4140 studs i just made them taller to hopfully take some of the stress off of the knuckle bearings. never seen it done before but i could be on to somthing. also by fluke it also acts as a spare tie rod bar. Its the same legnth and thread![cheers] 141652
